beyond the sm-58

I'm pretty sure we all know what a sm-58 sounds like, for both in sound reinforcement use and recording applications...

If you are a FOH guy for a band who is also moonlighting as the guy recording their live EP - you are probbably recording sm-58s on stage, basically you end up with them unless the singer has a personal preforance or possibly knows better to go out and find the best mic for his/her voice...

When you step beyond the 58 - what do you reach for? Do you look for a neodynium dynamic - or a condensor?

where do you turn to:

1) EV N/D (neodyniums)
2) AKG 535s?
3) Sennheiser's MD-431?
4) shure beta line?
5) sennheiser's evolution line?
6) shure's beta-87 condensor
7) or Neumann's kms-105?

what do you carry in your bag to swap out with the 58s when you are doing a remote?

Audix or EV mics. Ideally you'd fine the mic that sounds best on the singers voice and get a few of those for everyone to use.

Here for the gear

On a psychological note, if a singer uses a 58 virtually all the time, changing the mic can alter their comfort level & performance.

That said:

1 - I've never been comfortable with any mic from EV, anywhere on the stage,RE20 included. (Such heresy)!

2 - A good 535 is very good, but try to find 4 that match.

3 - 87's (A or C) are hard to make sound bad, and the quality is pretty consistent among all of them .

4 - On a desert island with live music, gimme a 58. The same desert island - with phantom power - gimme the KSM. It's capable of capturing every yawn & drool of a pope, and every nasal constriction (naturally occurring or otherwise) of Axl Rose.
