I am involved in a Brahms project both as a pianist and a recording engineer these days. Here is the first of Brahms´two songs op 90. Wonderful music that is seldomly performed.
Beautiful recording. Balance is very nice too. If you're the pianist, I have to admit you're showing an incredible amount of restraint, that instrument is further back in the mix than I'd expect! But all around it's very very nice.
The C-19 restrictions put the singer and viola player further forward from the piano and closer to the main mics than normal. This helps with the balance vs the piano. The piano is a very powerful Bösendorfer and can quite easily get to powerful in a mix like this.
Beautiful capture and beautiful playing all around. I especially like the violist (lots of nuance), and you did a great job of capturing the viola sound. That penultimate diminished seventh double stop is hard to play in tune--the player nailed it here IMO.
Thanks, JoeDef! Yes the viola player is really world class. Such a joy to work with, both recording and playing.
I do not have a picture, deedeeyeah, but I am putting together a video that I can link to on Sunday. It will be two songs op 90 and the first viola sonata.
