Stereo mic placement for recording concert grand

Hi Everyone,

I will be making some piano recordings this fall using a pair of MBHO 603/KA200 along with a MixPre6, probably in ORTF or a spaced pair. The recording will be in a relatively dry acoustic (a piano showroom) but will be using top-quality pianos, including a Fazioli Concert grand and various older Steinway concert grands.

I'd be interested in getting all of your perspectives on what the best and most reliable mic placement would be. I won't have a lot of time to experiment on each instrument, so would ideally like something that's easy to setup and replicate each time.

I've found that I prefer the warmth and space of a pair that's at around the height of the lid and several feet back (similar to the attached the photo) but have found that's it's difficult to get a balanced stereo image when I've tried it myself. Are there any particular measurements that I should be aware or particular place where the capsules should be aimed?

Many thanks!

How to record a real piano. Complete with sound samples so you can hear for yourself how the different techniques vary.
