Question Solo piano omni mics smallish room

6.5 foot grand piano in a smallish room with some realtraps treatment. A last minute recording request so not huge time to experiment. Will stereo omni pair work well? Or is it usually stereo cardioid?

I can move 1 realtrap behind omnis to eliminate some reflections.

Thank you.

re-occuring theme...

i suggest using cardioids and going very close, trying to eliminate some of the room. i wouldn't use a stereo-mic (meaning two capsules built into one body) but a spaced pair.

Thanks for that. I will use spaced pair cardioids.

I have recorded in same room before with AEA R88 and got great results (piano was accompanying a singer). I was curious about the omnis for fullness.

So I've attached an mp3 of what I 'mixed' today.

Photo shows:

I used AEA R88 ribbon parallel with the keyboard about 8 inches above the strings of the piano.

I put DPA 4006s on the stereo bar. I probably should have gone for pop placement with those and perhaps as suggested cardioids a better choice.

I also used ADK z67 Cardioid under the body of the piano.

Both can perform well: samples from small AB (~ 16 cm) pairs very close to (but not inside) the piano (6.8 foot grand piano) at home, cardio and omni.

IMO a simpler setup like in the above samples would perform better for your kind of music

Thanks for that. I will try that next time.

The clip isn't my usual kind of music but I understand your meaning.

I need to get out of the habit of wanting to blend 3 setups on piano :-)
