Recording in the wild.

Hello Fellows.

I have been experiencing remote recordings in the mountain.

After hiking a few hours, I am looking for a pretty place, interesting acoustic and elements of nature to record my flutes, japanese shakuhachi and indian bansuri.

It might sound awkward, but when you hiked and are over 10,000 feet (3000m), your thinking is altered and what is so easy in the studio becomes really hard to achieve up there !

I already recorded over 20 sessions.

I am using a pair of DPA 4060 into a mixpre-6m. I also use Rycote for the DPA
and eventually the bigger ones on top, but they remove a lot of details.

Recently i have added one Om1 witch i believe ads a lot in term of sound quality for the flute and enables to reduce the hiss of the recording.

At mixing I use a little reverb and some eq and limiting with ozone.
I also often cut some bass to limit the wind sound.

I would love to have some feedback from you, would it be about the recording or the mixing.

In this first film, Dpa only, I also recorded some piano in the studio.

Here is some Shakuhachi with 3 mics, I got bestst results with om1 at 12 feet (3.5m) and DPA closer to the main camera, around 35 feet (~10m) away.

This is my latest production with the Bansuri.

Many lowland musicians have issues at 10k feet when not acclimated first. Altitude sickness is common. Those that use lungs are further compromised. Horn players suffer the most.

Another issue is air density, it's thin up there and sound projection is far more difficult. Players may play harder/louder to make up for that effect.

You are right !
It is so much harder to fill up the instrument, specially the low notes.

I dont even talk about side wind issues !
