Best approximation to 8030 to use with 8040 for MS?

I'd like to try MS recording.

I have some 8040s. I also have some ribbon figure 8s, but no SDC figure 8.

What is the current best approximation to the (hypothetical) 8030 that I could buy that is similar in physical size to the 8040, and in design (not back-to-back cardiods)?

Thank you for any opinions.

Regards,

DG

P.S. I have waited long enough

B9 audio has a pretty nice looking small fig 8.

Also check out the Ambient Emesser. I have one of these paired with the Sennheiser 8050 and 8060 for MS (in different sized blimps, obviously!) and it works well. Its noise floor is higher than that of the Sennheiser (be sure you get version 2 of the Emesser, which is what I have; version 1 was reportedly noisier) and it doesn't have the same resistance to moisture, but I've used it to record in misty conditions on the coast of Brittany and didn't experience any problems.

How about a MKH30? Really good mic for M/S.

Yes the MKH8040 or 8050 works great with
the MKH30.
The 8040 or 8050 piggybacks easily on the
30 with Rycote back to back clips
and the combo works great with the
Rycote INV 7HG MKIII shockmount.

Is it this one, scroll down to the CM180 ?:https://b9audio.com/

If Sennheiser were going to build an 8030, they could base their design pretty confidently on this one, for that 8000 series family look

Doug T, didn't you field-test one of these a while ago...any findings and impressions as a fig 8 mic of the same calibre as the MKH mics ?

I tested the Blumlein Stereo version of this mic pretty extensively on early music and choir. I was very impressed with the sound. I did think that it sounded Schoeps-like, rather than Sennheiser-like. I am not sure I would pair it with a 8040 necessarily, but it might be fun to test it in an M/S configuration. Clearly a Schoeps clone however.

My only comment to the company was that I wasn't sure of build quality, having peeked inside, but I believe I had an early, if not a beta, version of this mic.

So all in all, I highly recommend these mics based on listening tests.
