Or not, if you're a fan of early reed instruments.

I think you'd want to be far enough away from these to capture the tone accurately...especially the bass rackett !

These players are clearly having a lot of fun. For your enjoyment and edification...

It's a good thing that instruments evolve over time, but interesting to see the antecedents too.
I guess that's how we eventually end up with the Bassoon-osaurus:

A few years ago I recorded a Renaissance band concert. Some players even made their own reproduction instruments. It was great fun. I was intrigued by the rackett that, thankfully, blended well in the ensemble. By itself, I think it could clear a room pretty quick.
