paired omni and figure 8 'virtual mic' positioning

What positioning preferences have been discovered by those who run a virtual variable pattern combo of omni and figure 8 mics?

I can see an argument for having the omni face on-axis, which with most (all?) figure 8's means the 8 at a right angle, capsule coincident to the omni, making a larger array footprint.

Or perhaps the mics aligned in a linear stack, omni facing into the top head grill of the 8. More elegant mounting, but less ideal omni pickup in the highs, on top of highs being reflected off the 8 body. The smaller the element, the better that works.

Curious to hear what people think.

Schoeps calls it ‚Polarflex‘. They used both variants over the years and published a plugin for that array. Some infos should be available on their website and the web.

Thanks, hadn’t seen that. Schoeps goes with right angle mounting these days it seems. They show Straus-Paket use of the same plug-in as well.
