Backup solution when recording on Venue Profile via MADI?

Hey Remote Slutz,

I will be recording a couple festival shows over the summer. Standard mixer is
a Digi Venue Profile. I plan to record the shows vie RME Madi directly from the board.

I usually use a second setup with splitter, preamps, HD24 etc.

Due to the fact that this will happen all over europe and we´re going to fly,
i am not able to carry that kind of setup with me. Since we will also be recording in some odd places and production already told me that aquiring the equipment locally could happen to be a PITA i´m looking for another portable setup.

I thought of using two 788t linked, so i could at least record stems (drums, git, keys vox etc) and my two ambience/crowd stereos. Would that be possible to obtain from the Venue via subouts or smth similar? If not, can anyone think of a solution which i could either carry the equipment for on a plane or where could be assured that i can anything rent locally. Standards should be no problem since the shows a pretty big and the production is rather advanced.

Since this is kind of a big and important job i´d like to be rather safe than sorry.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I'd rent a madi splitter (rme or dotec) and another laptop with rme MADI card.

Yes, i see. One thing i´d be worried about with this solution would be that i´d still be dependent on one MADI stream. I´ve seen situations with unstable clocking with drop outs as result. I´d rather have a completely independent system. These 788t recorders did never fail for me. 2 seperate laptops on one digital stream did.

If you're using MADI out from a desk, you're always going to be dependent on the reliability of that MADI source. You could split it at the desk to two cables, which means if you have one bad cable you're covered. But if it's clocking you're concerned about, any clock weirdness will end up in both lines.

But I did a bunch of shows last year recording MADI straight from the FOH desk without any trouble. If it's working during soundcheck it tends to stay working for the show. Although, come to think of it, I did have a problem a couple of years back when recording from a Digico D5 (turns out the desk's clock was running too fast, caused dropouts).

For gigs where I'm flying out and limited on what I can carry, I'm about to start using a JoeCo BBR64-MADI as a safety recorder. It's quite suited for that sort of thing - 1U high, light weight, and self-contained. Needs no screen or keyboard. Downside is it's relatively expensive. Main system is MBP + Madiface etc. Can let you know how the JoeCo works out.

I'd rather take my pair of custom PCs with RME cards in them, which I know are rock-solid, but that's 10U and probably 40-50kg. For reliability and control over everything, I'd always prefer to do an analog split and use my own preamps etc, even if I'm recording to MADI. But circumstances and budgets are tending to dictate the kit I can use.

At one show last year I turned up with my laptop and RME interfaces and the FOH engineer asked me where I had parked my recording truck! It never fails to amaze/dismay me how big a chasm there is between the band's budget and the TV sound budget.

Is this the same Avid Venue Profile for all shows? I would assume it is or you are making sure it has the Madi card already installed. Could you also get a Firewire card installed in the console? Then you could record 32 tracks directly into a laptop.

Of course, this is all still relying on the console, but if that console goes down the show stops, right?

My mobile rig fits as overhead.
4 unit gator portable rolling case.
Power conditioner
Focusrite Octepre mk II
Focusrite Octepre Dynamic

Record to laptop and a secondary HDD connected to the UFX.
Lines from the board or if they have a split, take it from there.

This may be too much gear for you but it's a pretty compact solution.

Does the Venue have that many analog/matrix outputs that the FOH people would be willing to setup+give you for your 788s? (That they wouldn't need for themselves?)
