Thank you.

I printed one of the ORTF templates off GS on a transparency. Maybe between the two templates I can set up ORTF correctly.

Judah - if your question was aimed at me - 25 cm is from experience, - have 4 CM3 as well as a pair of OM1 and have used them in the field.

Here's an example.

Nope - the venue is a very nice sounding chapel in Reykjavik, Iceland.

The mikes were ca 3m away from the soprano, and the harp and pump organ a little behind her.

Height from floor of mikes ca 3m as well

Absolutely beautiful! DAV BG1 is the next item on my list of things to acquire. Need a few more gigs to get enough dough for it.

You may want to check out the Line Audio preamps as well. Neutral and clean sounding. Performs like the best with a tenth of the price tag just like the mic's.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I have a MixPre-D which I find to be quite clean and neutral. The DAV BG1 seems to sweeten things a bit, which I like. If a Line Audio preamp is closer to Sound Device stuff, then it's not as attractive.

I downloaded the paper template here: https://www.gearslutz.com/board/4247664-post2.html

Used an ink pen to make the lines stand out and photocopied it onto a transparency which I taped to some plastic from a ice cream container and then cut out.

Those little chrome screws on the mic body actually help to visually line up the center of the mics.

^^^^^^^ NB The measurement in distance is from the center of the diaphragm, not the center of the end of the microphone. They are not the same, but close. Omnis closer to the ends than cards, I believe.

Thank you for pointing that out.

In the case of the CM3, about how far back from the tip of the mic are we talking about to make the measurement? It looks like the capsule starts inside the solid part of the mic just a bit before the slots on the mic body.

You'll have to make your measurement/best guess. I am not sure how big a difference it would make, but this is a game of mm in mic arrays. I have heard that even a slight deviation from standard will ruin an ORTF. But, see Williams Stereo Zoom and there is some flexibility. But note that folks seem to be having better results with the NOS array which is easier to set up: the mics are at 45 deg and 30 cm apart. As the CM3 is not a true card it seems to work better in this NOS array. The CM3 is a great mic, especially for its price. The best value out there and great for location work.

Point well taken. The source file is too big to upload (360 megs). The GS site doesn't take .ogg files, which I find to be quieter. Suggestions welcome.

As far as the piano's mechanical noise, there may be a Steinway on the (distant) horizon- we can only hope.

If you like, here are few samples of monochord, violin, flute and hank drum, recorded with Line MP2 preamp with alternating OM1 and CM3 microphones:

Great clips!

I really like CM3 on the monochord.

So, what's your impression as a user of all that nice high end gear (Forssell preamps, Schoeps, etc. mics...)? Did you try to compare the CM3s to Schoeps MK21 directly maybe?

I have not compared them directly - except of violin ... Schoeps MK22 and Forssell combo sounds a bit different than Line combo, but Line does not sound worse .. different ...

Thanks for your samples, Ivo! Sounds very good as always!

I'm a fan of those cheapo mics. I am really surprised to prefer cardioids over omnis in all cases. That's quite opposite to what I am used to. In bigger halls I usually work in, most of the sound comes from the OM1s.

Is that a small studio room that makes my feeling? Or maybe spacing between mics is wider that my ears are used to?

Would you compare CM3's pattern more to MK21 or MK22?

Just wondering, where do the capsules in the cm3/om1 mics come from?

Hi all!

My 2 Cm3's arrived yesterday!! Great!
After much scouring this post I decided it was worth the "plunge" !

I'm now curious as to your thoughts on WHAT 2 CHANNEL PRE TO MATCH for the CM3s ??

I've picked up some ideas reading the post here but: my budget is really around €500 so for good 2 channels I'll probably have to look at used market.

I just wonder, as general consideration, if you would def. pair a "clean" pre or something with some character. I suppose for classical/acoustic instr. recording and location recording a clean is a must, but I'm curious if the CM3's match well to a particular "character" pre?
Has anybody tried it with tube pres?

Finally : I was impressed how my voice sounds through it! Very "clean" but also somewhat enhanced! Does anybody have good results as a vocal mic also?

Thanks

I have been very impressed with the D.A.V. BG 1. Clean but sweet.

I often use the mic for recording speech. Very impressed.

Hi, the obvious suggestion is the Line Audio 2MP. Incredibly transparent and well within your budget. Mates well with the CM3, of course.

Re: capsules, they're built by Roger using Japanese parts. But they're not off the shelf capsules stuck in the mics - there's a lot of work involved and he's currently rejecting an awful lot of parts from the Jap supplier. I have my fingers crossed because if it ends up delaying pending orders it will be quite uncomfortable, but then I figure that quality comes at a cost, or yu have to wait. In this case, patience is required.

Perhaps you would trust Line Audio with the pre as well? The pre's from Line Audio Compares with the best on the market if you are looking for clean. You will hear the source and microphone, not the preamp.

I use a Sound Devices 788T or a Lynx Aurora 8 with Line Audio 8MP. I had an Earthworks ZDT 1024 for a while and don't feel I miss anything with my current gear.
