Ribbon Mics for Live String Recording

Hi Guys,
I've been reading up on mics, and I think I like the idea of getting one or a set of Joly-modded Apex 205s . . . is it reasonable to use these in a Blumlein Pair, or how else would I set them up for good effect? I assume they'd need to be closer in than a set of sdc microphones.
I would be recording running directly from an interface (saffire/profire/audiofire), but do those preamps provide enough gain to really work with ribbon mics?
Thanks for any info, I"m still a Noob, but trying to get better here!
Chris

Ribbons are nice. The less expensive ones have QC problems, the ribbons may not be tensioned correctly. If Joly tinkers with it the ribbon would be tensioned right. The ribbon output is very low so most of the time you will need a good, clean pre-amp to run it through on its way to the recorder mic input. A few recorders can take them directly but it is not common and maybe not a good idea.
