Okay, here's the dream. Replace the (very) respectable pre-amps in the 788T with one little unit of MH ULN8. Nirvana! At least until I need the 9th input<g>.

This thread came awfully close to degenerating into a classic Gearslutzfoodfight (SM) but gave me the idea of starting a thread about setup times-- which I will later.

I have used both the Nagra VI and SD (but own neither). Really similar to discussions about whether the Lexus or BMW is superior---

My solution to the question raised by this thread was to buy a TASCAM DR-680 and pocket the several grand difference. For the missions I send it on it is entirely adequate.

Doug : so long as we are fantasizing, a ULN8 with a dedicated control surface: nothing much pretty much the same as the cl-9 with dedicated eq knobs. Hmm. Now there is a boat I could anchor around :-)
