Couple questions on mandolin strings

Though I’m a newbie player but it’s time to change strings!
1) Do mandolin string sets differ by gauge like guitar strings? Or all them have the same gauge?
2) Any recommendation of good brand? Being a guitar player I’m a fan of Ernie Ball strings…

1- mando strings come in four sets of two strings per set. each pair of strings is the same gauge but each pair is a different gauge then the next pair.

2- d'addario medium gauge is a good brand

No, no, no. I didn't mean this by asking question. Do the sets among themselves vary by guage? But since you mentioned 'medium' so I percieve there are light and heavy guage sets for mandolin as well...

sorry, i misunderstood. but, yes, they come in different gauges. i would be leary of using light gauge on a mandolin. go for the mediums.

I've seen 9 guage at a local music shop. is it considered as "light"? What is medium - 10 or 11?

i use the 10's on mine. I prefer the martin strings over the d'addarios. strings are relatively cheap, so buy a set from each brand and try them out over time. some brands will sound better on your mandolin than others.

cheers,
wade

Why this set called "light" when the guage numbers are .011 - .014 - .024 - .037

I am using the ghs set of A250 Light. The gauges are 10-15-24-36 phosphor Bronze. There brighter than I would like so I would suggest going medium gauge. Something like 11-16-26-40.

Is ghs brand a peer (quality-wise) to martin, dean markley and ernie ball?

To me GHS is far superior to others in some things. It's what i use on guitar. That being said, the boomers really stink. I prefer Guild for acoustics but not sure if they make mandolin strings. It's such a personal thing you really have to try them for yourself. I think most name brand strings are up to a certain level or they would not have been selling strings for 20 to 100 years. And i despise ernie ball. It's a personal thing.

I agree with Old Cane, its a matter of personal choice for strings. I often wonder if I am missing out on something by not using Martins or some other brand. So I will keep changing manufactures untill I find what I am looking for.
