Question What Portable Recorder should I use to record real sounds/samples/drums?

I remember reading an article where Trent Reznor mentioned he carrying a portable DAT recorder around to different locations to record drum hits. A good idea to make your own samples. What I was wondering is will using a digital handheld recorder not cut the mustard for sound quality? What portable recorder would be best for recording at high quality? Is a heavy DAT the only way to get some good quality? I really like the idea of handheld devices because they're easy to take anywhere, but I don't want my samples sounding sterile.

(Wasn't sure to post this here or somewhere else. It can be moved if there is a more relevant spot.)

+1.

Everyone that got a Korg MR loves it and thinks it's one of the best purchases ever. Including myself.

I saw something at my local music store.

Looks like a radioshack SPL meter type... handheld gizmo.

if it was in XY, it might have been a Zoom, Sony, or Yamaha brand.

I have the Zoom H4N, and I love it. Usually about $350

EDIT... its now on sale everywhere for $300. Bastards... I just bought mine a month ago :P
