Depends on the situation - the last time i used this arrangement was for a piano and cello - the ORTF pair were the mains and the omnis were there to bring in the room and the bottom end of the piano - no delay and I had the omnis at -12dB on this occasion.

But the rig is suitable for a large range of recordings - I recorded on 4 tracks so I could sort ot the relative levels in the editing stage.

That top bump seems to hear a lot of room sound, which can be good or bad. The 193's sound much darker, with rather thick lower mids and no bump on top. On percussive sources, they manage to sound "fast" without sounding bright.

Before receiving the 107's, I'd been a bit concerned that they would render my 193's superfluous, but they are really quite different animals.

Hi David, how does the 107's fig. of 8 compare to the MKH30?

The original TLM170 was used on Vanessa William's first release, "The Right Stuff". An Audio Upgrades mic preamp was also used. Michael Frenke was the engineer, it was cut at Jam Power studios and OHenry in the SFV.

Well, if it is worth it to anyone, here are a couple of 107 examples.

One is a harp, viola, flute trio with the 107 on viola.

The other is a video of a Haydn Mass with the 107 as a solo voice spot.

Pas mal...

What were the main mics in the video? And timpani? (Especially convincing)

I had a quick listen (very nice), but my brain is freaking out from the "there it is, there it isn't" TLM107. It appears to be on one side (SL) of the conductor in the wide shot and on the other side (SR) in the closer shot.

I'm going to have another go with my eyes shut.

edit: OK, I couldn't keep my eyes shut.... I now see the mics are actually on both sides, but positions are changing.

Forgive me for being "that guy".

The mains were Josephson C617set. I think the tympani was a Shure KSM141 set to Omni.

Yes 107s on each side for other soloists. Set to wide cardioid. Double duty as low outriggers for strings because why not?
