Converting mts files into mp4

There ought to be an easy way to do this, and according to my *exhaustive* web searches ("exhaustive" being I spent at least several seconds looking at it) there are a zillion freeware apps to do this... only when I try to download any of them, they stall out at about 20 MB and's all she wrote.

Any... like... carefree, flawless way to make this happen?

Joel - your normal video editing software should do it. Import the mts, edit as needed, then save the render as an mp4. Otherwise, as you mention, there are a number of free video file converters out there - I didn’t know any of them were limited in file size capacity. Try Movavi. Just a note though, I have found mp4 to not be the best format for music videos. I output my files as mkv format, which uses a Dolby algorithm for the audio.

I second for hand brake.
Mp4 is a container and is good for streaming.
Try Davinci. A full editing program. It's free, extremely powerful and would likely be able to transcode just about anything.
DaVinci Resolve 15 | Blackmagic Design
VLC can do transcoding but it takes some work to setup.

Okay, you've talked me into it, Handbrake it is! (Where these people come up with names for the apps, that's a whole mystery wrapped in an enigma itself.)

You guys are the bestest!

It comes from France...so inquire no further re. naming...maybe it's some sort of Tour de France metaphor/enigma ?
