Thanks for starting an own thread about the Nevaton BPT and for the interesting discussion!

Two of these are at a fixed(?) 90-degree mutual angle and can be set to either figure-8 or cardioid. The third points straight ahead (ie. in the middle of that 90-degree angle) and can be set to cardioid, figure-8 or omni.
Yes, exactly!

Of course each tool has it's own strengths and disadvantages and the discussions about it are naturally happening along the lines of flexibility versus sound-quality versus price and durability. We believe that the Nevaton BPT will find its very own place beside all the products of all the other truly great companies which have been mentioned already (also in the other thread where these microphones have been discussed)

The very(!) low self-noise figures of the Nevaton BPT (and also other Nevaton mics in general) are important, especially if the microphone has to be fixed quite far away from the sound-source, but there is another strength of the BPT based on the fact that the directional characteristic of the capsules of the Nevaton BPT are NOT the result of a matrix, where capsules which are located on slightly different locations are summed together (Edwin Pfanzagl-Cardone wrote about that already). The BPT-system is entirely based around the idea of capturing the maximum sound-quality in a real world situation - an operating concert- or opera-hall, a church, a theatre, (...). In reality it is often impossible for the sound-engineer to place the microphones on ideal positions (because the audience would not accept that, or because of the stage light,...).

One example about such a situation -

The famous "Wiener Burgtheater" recorded the "Vienna Life Ball, 2017" with one Nevaton BPT (in conjunction with acoustic panel) and outriggers and told us the following - Because of TV-broadcasts the mic-placement was very critical. The high directional characteristic of the BPT allowed them to install the microphone far away from the sound-source, out of the sight of the TV-cameras. It took them only around 30 minutes to set-up the whole system (Nevaton BPT + outriggers) and they could instantly provide truly great sounding signals in a "ready to broadcast quality". A similar setup will be used for the "Vienna Life Ball 2018", but this time together with a newly designed preamp (more infos about the new preamp are coming soon).

Nevaton BPT recording vs. TV-broadcast live-mix

Are you interested in how a pure recording sounds, with just one Nevaton BPT microphone, compared to a TV-broadcast mix that was recorded with many microphones?

Review the video (at the end of the text on the Nevaton website) that contains both recordings:

Case study: Nevaton BPT recording vs. TV-broadcast live-mix.
