Gefell KEM 970 Line Array Microphone

Has anyone here used one or had experience with it, in either a recording or public address capacity ? Been around since '99 or so. I love the term 'non-rational symmetry'

At around US$10.5k, one might expect something pretty special...or is that just priced so the shareholders meetings and parliament houses will be sure to use it... as shown in the photos ?

Nice idea, differential horizontal and vertical pickup patterns, somewhat like that obtained by the Pearl rectangular diaphragm mic

If the polar patterns were each variable, and the whole assembly (and cost) miniaturized, it could make a nice spot mic ?

The KEM 970 was discontinued a few years ago and replaced by the KEM 975.

The new 975 is quieter and has the optional Delta capsule to increase directivity at the lower frequencies.

You can't reduce the size without compromising directivity (directivity at the bottom end has a direct relationship with the length of the array).

With the optional Delta capsule, the KEM 975 is an excellent microphone for picking up a choir that is behind the orchestra without picking up the spill from the orchestra (this is often used by broadcasters) and the lower noise floor of the 975 was done specifically for quality music recording purposes.

Of course, you don't need the Delta capsule when used for speech and a single KEM works extremely well for video conferencing as one mic. picks up everyone clearly so they can concentrateon the conference, not on the technology.

The capsules are basically the same ceramic capsules that are used in the M 300 microphone - so not cheap capsules - and there are 8 of them (9 if you include the Delta capsule). In fact the KEM 975 is a very expensive microphone to make and the selling price is very low in comparison to the manufacturing costs.

The preliminary data sheet on the KEM 975 is HERE

The new data sheet is HERE

The second data sheet replaces the preliminary one that was done in the UK when the 975 first came out.

A paper presented to the Institute of Acoustics on the KEM 975 is HERE

HERE you can download a PowerPoint slide with embedded audio that demonstrates the directivity of the KEM 975 with and without the Delta capsule.

These are from the UK site - Gefell do not yet have these on their site.

I hope this helps.
