Blumlein question

If I mic a soloist straight toward the center of a Blumlein stereo mic, and the piano is at a 90 degree angle to the mic (ie, the side of the mic is aimed toward the piano), does the output sound the same as if both players were playing straight into the mic? Is it also the same if soloist plays to centr front of the mic and the piano plays to center rear of the mic? Does phase difference between front and rear have no effect on the sound in those two situations? Thanks.

It depends on the mic or mics being used.
And the off axis response of those mics.

I find that a blumlein made from AKG414 has a more noticeable each drop off in the dead zones/capsule crossover area than say the Royer SF-24.

you really have to experiment for yourself.

You would have a noticeable cancellation of sound with the piano at 90 degrees.
Likewise it would be poor practice to have the soloist in front and the piano in the rear. There would be no good reason to make that set up.

Better to go with a trad. vocal recital set up where the singer is in front of the piano.

If having the piano at 90 degrees is a requirement, then switch to a NOS main set up and spot mic the piano. See if the soloist needs any help.

Yes, this would be an sf12 or sf24.

Yep. Sometimes it's better not to mess with what works.
