Listening Observations From 80's/90's Rap,R&B,Pop?

While listening to some 80's/90's rap, r&b , pop music, I realized that most vocals never sounded WAY TO BRIGHT/ESSY or had to much mouth noises. Some of the records sounded real clean, well put together, and very nice to the ears rather than loud and distorted (Mostly 80's R&B/Pop)! Like some vocals had a perfect DeEsser or technique. Then again most were recording in pro studios not home setups. Anyone else notice this?

maybe because vocals weren't overly loud in the mix like most stuff nowadays?
