NGD: Coveted Sampler Alert

I lucked out big time and scored a deal of the decade IMO. I saw this and jumped on it. I was having major anxiety attacks just hoping and praying that I wasn't too late. I guess I just happened to be looking for it at the right time. Paid $500 for this beaut. Thank you craigslist, definitely feeling blessed to have one of these in my hands now.

I've yet to test it everything on it. The only thing I know is that it turns on, I've yet to incorporate it into my setup as I've been busy trying to rearrange to make room for it. But if somethings don't work I'm not gonna fret since I saved a whole hell of a lot of money on it. So it's not gonna hurt me to put a little time or money into my investment.

I do know that I have 2 sticky pads. One likes to get stuck and then I got the first one stuck.

Yeah there's always some type of catch in this Ebay/vintagesynth.com/sonicstate world. Folks usually know the worth of gear, but they can be hard up for cash or think it's broken. I've been buying up cheap MPCs on craigslist for the past year and half. Basically as a hobby not to be my main setup. I've never paid more than $100 for any of them, but I finally found a stopping point. I had a guy sell me a 2000xl that had a bad sensor pad and what he thought was a bad zip drive. The Zip drive was perfect...he was just dumb enough to leave the zip disk in while transporting it (click of death). I changed the sensor pad out with another MPC that I bought for $40. BAM! Perfectly working MPC 2000xl,w/8-outs, max memory, and mint screen (the hardest thing to replace). Overall, it cost me less than $100 and I still have others that just need new screens sitting here.

When I get chance in the upcoming week, I'll probably take it apart clean the pads, check the pad springs which should hopefully fix the problems associated with the sticking. I'll then go through all the outputs checking to make sure they all work as well as all midi i\o's. The screen is slowly on its way out. The right corner is dimmer than the rest but I'm just gonna use it until it gives out then replace it. If I have any problems I'll just contact Forat.

You don't happen to have any spare, 2000xl eb-16 effect boards do you?

Thanks!

I finally got it setup but I'm having some issues I got a feeling I might have to send it in to Forat to go through

I turn it on and it does the regular boot up loading sounds process. I push any one of the drum pads and I get no sound. I'm hooked up to the mix out and tried the other outputs but I get a hum out of any of the outputs and when I'm plugged into the mix output and touch the mix volume knob I get a lot of scratchyness so I'm guessing the pot needs to be cleaned. But regarding sounds, isn't there some stock sounds onboard it or something cause I'm not getting anything! ARGHHH

Well I always thought there were some stock sounds that came loaded on the chips or something cause I see people who buy 808 eproms or whatever and put them in their sp's.

like you've never used a preset or sample library

It's always good to have some stock sounds to mix with user samples. That's a basic element to sound design IMO.

How many people have access to a REAL TR-808, 909, Linn, DMX, etc?

Actually...if you go to the Kid Nepro site the very first SP1200 disk is:

101 Nepro TR808 Rap Drum Kit

not mention:

144 Yamaha RX5 Drum Kit
201 TR808 Big BOOM Kicks
102 Nepro TR909 Dance Drum Kit
145 Linn Drum & Simmons Drum Kits
200 HR16 Rap Drum Kit
147 Classic Beat Boxes Vol 2
149 Classic Beat Boxes Vol 4
154 SP12 Drum Kit (probably the sounds the OP was looking for)

So yes...classic drum machines are represented in that library. I speak facts and rarely rubbish. Plus, I try to only offer my opinion when I think others can benefit.

With that said, I think $10 for a floppy is a bit pricey, but if you need an OS disk and some basic "bread n' butter" sounds to get you started it might be a good investment. I don't think there's an easy way to transfer wav to SP1200 format.
