Plugins for Pro tools

Hey guys. I've been using Pro tools for about a year now, and i'm on mac.

Do you guys have any suggestions on which plugins to get? In all this time, i've only been using the standard plugins, and i do not want to buy waves, etc. without knowing what i'm going for.

And yes, i do know what a compressor, EQ and so forth is.

Thanks for stopping by!

First off...welcome to the forum!

Now is a good time to pick up plugs, both for the quality that plugs achieve now, and for the value (lots of sales going on now). Just keep in mind that a mix engineer worth his weight will be perfectly capable of delivering a quality mix with stock plugins. So you don't "need" any of the following plugs.

Here are some of the basics:

CLA Classic Compressors
Studio Classics Collection (SSL, API, & Neve)

FET Compressor
Trident A-Range
Tube Tech CL1B
Summit Audio Grand Channel

+1 for Softube, SoundToys, SSL & L2 from Waves. I like RVox as well but I'm pretty much using Sonnox Oxford, SoundToys, & Softube the majority of the time. Waves are cool but HIGH and you can get a different variety of plugins at that price. I'd recommend Sonnox Oxford Elite!

Soundtoys, Valhalla room, all the Massey stuff, and it's worth looking at the waves packages as well, though the neve/ssl/API stuff is probably more relevant when you know the hardware.

Vcc/vtm also great, but they take time to get to know - you might struggle to hear what's going on at first!

But Massey is so cheap you can't really ignore that stuff.

Psycho Monkey is right on with this. I don't know how I overlooked the Massey offerings in my first post. I use them on every mix.
