API Converters (Tony?)

Yo', Tony, have used the new API preamp A/D enough?
Are the digital converters really comparable to the ones on a lavry or apogee piece?
Why the price is so low for two channels of preamp AND a A/D?
I know the preamps are 312's so that's good enough...

I still am waiting to do some vocal tracking with it... But, the converter's are top quality!

My theory is that they cut the 3124+ in half and basically added the converter where the other pre's used to be. It costs much more money to make 2 x 312's, then a top notch two channel converter in parts (just the transformers alone cost more)... No matter what anyone says, it doesn't cost a fortune to make a good quality A/D. It's all about the little bit of analog circuitry with in the converter and the design of it. The single most expensive part in nearly every piece of gear is the box it's contained in. So, putting both pieces in the same box brings the price down in a major way.

Tony, can you compare the A2D conversion with any other converters so we have some sort of reference point?

such as 'more similar to RME ADI-2 than Mytek A/D' ?
or 'closer to Apogee than RME'

i realize its all entirely subjective, but its good to have a reference point.
"Top Quality" can be "mediocre" to some or "the best A/D ever" to others.

This is like the $10,000 question isn't it?

I can say that the converter sounds great... When opening the top, you can see that they used the API 2510 discrete opamps in the analog section of the converter (same opamp as the 8200).. The thing sounds like an API, and uses what has been described as the best A/D chip on the market.

So, how does it sound compared to the RME, Mytek, and Apogee's of the world... I'm not ready to say it sounds better or worse than any of them. To my ears it is a big improvement over the Digi 002 which is all I have here to compare to. I really want to track some vocals with it before I say it's the "greatest converter ever" or anything like that. But, people aren't going to be disappointed with this converter.
