How to Encode and play back Surround Sound on a home theater system?

I have a mix that i made in surround. I export stereo tracks individualy. So I have 5 files that are "surround". Now how do I burn these and play them back on a home theater? Please help! Also has anyone had trouble with a stereo mix being played on a home thearter system and it sounds terrible, but the mix sounds great in a car or in the studio.. Thanks everyone for reading!

Surround encoding is a bit more complicated than that.

For example, you don't have surround files right now. You have a bunch of discrete stereo files. You need to record your mix as a 5.1 surround file. From there you need an encoder to put it into one of the various surround formats which can then be burnt on a DVD and played.
