One of the best DAW's for the price for 2010 and beyond.......REAPER would get my vote.

Peace.
Its easily one of the best deals in Audio.

The only factor that doesnt put Reaper in the top DAWS isnt a lack of features, its a lack of an insane price-tag.

If you havent tried Reaper....thats a shame. If you think Reaper is any less quality at all as some of the other DAW's, thats also a shame.

Oh...and on topic -

My best new plugs for 2010 would have to be Amplitube 3 and PSP Vintage Warmer.

Finally got a PSP - I likes it. Amplitube 3 is awesome.

Any slightly-better-than-average guitar monkey can record a completely dry signal and then use Amp3 to put some lipstick on that pig.

Im just settling into the PSP and trying to distinguish whats better about the audio as opposed to whats simply louder.

Fantastic product. But some of the reasons it's not fully accepted yet are valid (see midi editing, no scoring, no ASIO DM, etc) ... and some other reasons are just nonsense. It also takes more manual setup out of the box than most and some people just can't be bothered.

if you are a experienced user of the top DAWs PT, Sonar, Logic etc..Reaper is too all over the place, and routing midi for me was a giant PITB..you cant beat the price, but there is no time for me anyway to be a new user..stick to the DAW you know..

Bro RasCricket, your correct.
Along with REAPER as being one of the Good Cheap DAW's, another overlooked DAW has got to be MAGIX

MAGIX Samplitude Music Studio 16

http://www.magix.com/us/music-maker-special-versions/greasealizer/workshop-video-using-music-maker/

Cheap but very good $80 at Best Buy, I used it for mix & mastering and it is the bomb.

Bro, Tal213 although I can see your point, for me I'm busy as well, but the only way to see what can enhance my workflow was to check out what other possibility's out there.

I would try them on my down time and is very happy that I did. Some people like myself often export / import and use more than one DAW for various reasons.

The only way I find if something would work for me like a car, food, TV, Workstation, Daw, Plugins, whatever is to try it, I might like it....LOl.

Peace.

Hmm, yeah - I got my decoder ring out and everything and Im not gettin nothin , haha.

I may be totally wrong, but I think ASIO is a buzz word with anyone who does home digital recording and is looking for low latency.

Please post whatever equipment you think is good, or may have been overlooked that we all could view or possibly benefit from.

I guess what you are implying is that Avid is now geared towards alot of home digital recording folks with low latency?

Umm, isnt ASIO a driver protocol? Err.....yup:

Audio Stream Input/Output (ASIO) is a computer sound card driver protocol for digital audio specified by Steinberg, providing a low-latency and high fidelity interface between a software application and a computer's sound card. Whereas Microsoft’s DirectSound is commonly used as an intermediary signal path for non-professional users, ASIO allows musicians and sound engineers to access external hardware directly.

**Underlines are from original text from Wiki and do not represent key words or anything :P

Not trying to fuss n fight with ya man - I think you may be a little confused about what ASIO is. Maybe IM the wrong one. It does happen.

Im pretty darn sure ASIO has zero to do with Avid.

"ASIO Drivers" are the most sought after drivers for sound cards as they allow for recording with the least latency compared to previous driver protocols such as Microsofts Direct Sound. (Off the top of my head, I think WME is another older driver protocol - someone can correct me there though)

For instance, I have a craptastic HD Realtek sound card. It sucks. However, when given the "Asio4All" DRIVER, it changes that craptastic card into a useable sound card for low latency recording. Again, ASIO is a driver protocol that can be implemented and used in any DAW, not just PT. Its simply a type of driver for your soundcard.

Others may have better info to add.

Oh snap - I see the vid now for the PSP Vintage Warmer!

Woo hoo! Im sitting here with Christmas coffee and I was just reading through the PDF instructions for the Vintage Warmer so wow....perfect timing!

Thanks a bunch, Reggmail. I finally got around to getting one of those after seeing a lot of people here say its in their arsenal. The video should be a great help because I mentioned earlier, im still at the point of seeing what its doing to the audio, not just making it louder.

Cheers!

EDIT: The PSP video - Ooo, this guy is burnin' Waves plugs. Lol, pointing out that the Waves L1 is still for sale for $300.....truly is a bit mind blowing. And isnt there WUP after that too? Wow @ Waves.

I don't get why CJ put ASIO and the reference to PT into the equation...

Yeah, PT is now compatible with the ASIO driver model.
Digidesign interfaces had ASIO drivers for a long time, so they could be used with other DAW's.. now PT doesn't need any Digi/Avid interface anymore.
But that's hardly news here at Gearslutz.

I thought the thread was about the best plug-ins of 2010.. maybe I'm crazy...... anyhow, back OT:

My Panasonic Lumix cam was one of the better investments for me this year. heh

Seriously, like already said in my other post, Softube Trident and the Dyna-mite are great.
Plus I rediscovered the URS Classic Console Strip Pro.. I think the update to version 2 was in 2010 and it made the CSP so much more useful with the adition of real saturation to the input stage models.

Merry Xmas.

Really like seeing the PSP VW love

That thing was kickin ass back in the day and in this day and age of peeps jumping on the new bandwagons and new plug of the moth flavours constantly changing, to see an old plug like that still kickin it is ultra swish.

We should start an 'old plugs' thread, after I moved away from having too many VSTi.. one that stayed was the NI Pro 53 .. still cool.

Not a problem. I think 'FAW CIRCLE' is different to other synths in that you dont really need to understand synthesis to create some epic patches. Env management is also creatively illistrated with a small ball running along the lines you draft for the patch allowing the user to see and hear what is going on. Wave table synth has never been easy. This is a new approach and some of the presets are great. That being said this really opens up once you learn and understand it. I would say it's now my go to for bass (Full stop!)

best plugins ive found in 2010

Ok, I'm not sure if this is 2010, but I got it last year: Rndigital UNIQUEL-IZER. This is for me THE equalizer, too bad I have to stick to the LE edition because the pro version has a less usable GUI... anyway, this plugin does the equalizing job so smooth musically that I can't compare it to any other digital eq plugin.

For the compression/amp side I find myself using pretty frequently Softube Bassamp for the bass tracks, but sometimes I still get better sounding results with the "old" Ampeg by Ik Multimedia.

I was also pretty impressed by the new Nomad Factory plugins, especially the E-Tube Tape warmer.

I'm sure there's a lot more though I've missed, I'll keep following this thread to get some ideas
