mixing monitors

i see in a lot of peoples pictures of their studios and stuff they have multiple kinds of monitors.. are these different as far as being like reference monitors, hi fi speakers, car speakers, etc? or are they just different brands of reference monitors?

The purpose of a multiple monitor set-up is so that you can hear how your tracks will sound outside your studio and in a average environment. You should have a good pair of nearfields and a pair of inexpensive to medium quality computer speakers as a good base set-up. Because the computer speakers will not remove room coloration like the nearfields will, it will give you a good representation of how your tracks will translate to the average listener. Most studios however use several pairs of monitors to listen on.
