true the rim is so millenium
a diff. snare sound (or a snare under the rim) would make it less "dated". IMHO.

too bad pharrel can't sing
Dude,

Peeps said the same about Jimi Hendrix.

Almost every day when walking through the city I hear that track eminating from a car, a club, a cafe...

So the brother's not Julio Iglesias. It's a classic track. Give the brother props for a job well done. The fact that he "can't sing" makes it all the more admirable an accomplishment, in my opinion.

You're not getting old on us, are you teach??

Trans X has changed the way I work. More Snares? done deal. More kick beater? Done deal. Etc. Kuddos to Waves. Rendered the SPL Trans Des useless in comparision to me.

alots been said about the low end, so i wont wax that anymore....

but along with tweaking that low end of the kick, if im working on something that i want to sound real dirty grimey, like that NY sound, ill actually layer a lightyly compressed dirty snare on top of the kick, level it REAL low (so you only notice it if you A/B), then air out the top end with EQ entire thing (kick and light snare)

Good point...this also works with certain hats...a lot of my kicks actually have a little highhat left in them from when i sampled them and this gives it that crisp attack.

i start with a good kick sample from a filthy old piece of vinyl, or take a sample of just vinyl crackling, layer that with three other drums on my Mpc 4000 an filter and pitch each one diffrently until i like what I hear, If needed Il resample that back in (sometimes at a lower bit rate) and stack that with a 808 playing with the adsr settings to get everything to sit right. After all that, parrallel compression during the mix should be enough, using the compressed signal as he main signal, and bring the original up to taste.

Believe it or not, reason has made this process even easier, stacking foour or five redrums inside a combinator, oickig dirffrent samples for each, its of the hook.
