miking a vocal in mono or stereo?

I want to know which miking technique I should use to get the effect I want. I want to mike a vocalist who will be singing/rapping.
The acoustics of the room aren't particularly impressive so should I do it in mono? That will also give me no problems with translating into mono.
But which techniques are there which will give different imaging? I might want a narrow centre image or a much wider image or a very distance sound. I understand that EQ or reverb may play a part in this?

thanks for any advice.
