GZA / Genius - Liquid Swords

It's been a while since I considered myself really up to date with hip hop, but I used to listen to a lot of it. Since we have the attention of some hip hop producers in this forum, I'd like to get some opinions on this album from the Genius (et al).

I bought the album years ago (ten years? I forget how long ago)... I listen to it today and it's still as fresh as ever (IMHO). The lyrics are just unbelievable, the production comes across really exciting. Excellent stuff.

Any other opinions on it ? Anyone think I'm miles off the mark ? Any other similarly exciting projects out these days i should be checking out?

Glad to hear it. I've just stuck it on again tonight. Awesome stuff, definitely one of Wu's finest moments. And agreed on the lyrics; they are so engaging and poetic; makes a lot of the gangsta rap of the same era seem almost childish.

that era 92-96 was the best so far in rap for me. BIG, 2pac, jay-z, mobb deep, wutang, lil kim, foxy brown, dr dre (chronic), snoop, etc. all came out then. folks that had been out b4 like nas, redman, busta, and ll cool j dropped great albums in those years too.

That's the realest verse Jay's spit since Reasonable Doubt, which was his most lyrical and worst selling album. My fourth grade teacher was right... Life is not fair.

Just bought Shogun Assassin yesterday (where most of the movie samples came from). It was cheap, I finally couldn't resist (though I already have the LW&C joints).

One of my favorite albums, all-time. CD clips like a MF, though.

i remember when liquid swords came out it totally took wu-tang to the next level.. even cats that didn't listen to hip-hop would totally zone out on it.. something about those haunting beats and GZA's mega calm demeanour.. super cinematic.. also brought out the best in wu-members:

I can't agree more. Its timeless Music, which means its Real Music, not a commercial Production.

Really? Timeless? Could have Bach understood these music and content? Any fucckin music anyone likes can be put under "timeless hence classic thus not commercial" ****. Still, me put nearly any 2pac, Ice Cube, Ice-T, Public Enemy joint over those Wu lyrics though I love the delivery, the flow, the beats.

No, I like some cheesy stuff from different decades. I like it, but it's not timeless. Big difference between "like" and putting art in social- and cultural context. The intention when using the adjectiv "timeless" is not a theoretical construct - like a time machine journey and traveling back in time (for example to show Bach wu tang music....wtf) - it just means that the music can be appreciated from our future generations. Most "timeless" stuff was done in the heyday of that artform (hard rock: led zep, sabbath, purple../ beat music: beatles, animals../ bebop: parker, gillespie, etc..) In this case: the so called "golden era" of rap. You find that song in many respected "all time lists" and we are still talking and loving it. Do you think the beatles are timeless? I hope so. But i bet bach wouldnt appreciate their music, oder liege ich da falsch, mein freund und kupferstecher?

Timeless as in new generations keep gravitating towards it, or timeless as in sounds like it could have been produced today? It sounds old but new generations keep finding Liquid Swords
