Usually an L1 to catch peaks. I like to get the kick and snare loud, so I need that L1 to tame it a little down to -0.2. Thats about it though for me.

Also, when I mix rock, it is a completely different animal...nothing touches my 2bus except maybe a light impulse verb or some compression. My peaks in rock are usally around -3.

Allen Smart C1(post fader)

basically set up so it's never in gain reduction, just sending the signal through the box. With a fader in hand you can play g_d as to when the C1 reacts,

in the box: renEQ->rencomp->s1imager->l2->dither

no, i don't work for waves.

last time outside the box was: ssl 4000g quad comp->api 500b's->gml 8900-> 1/2" atr 102. the 1/2" later got dumped back into PT w/ an l2 set vert modestly, just to keep the clips away.

oh, by the way.

my ITB 2-bus:

Digi Med. Delay (custom setting to create Depth)
Sony Inflator (creates a nice thickness)
Waves L2 ( to stop peaks, thres. about -3, ceiling always -0.2)

I just saw i mix with the main bus sent to outboard EQ and then COmpression, then bused back Into PT.

Waves Ren comp - Just a touch...
Waves Linear Broadband EQ - Nice...
Waves S1 Imager - A touch of stereo widening
TC Native Reverb Plus - 0.2s - 0.6 / 5-10% - just to jell the track
Waves L2 - Only for dithering to 16 bits no maximizing

I usually just have the waves linear EQ for any last minute changes.....or changes that were better off applied to the whole of the mix followed by an L2.

I tend to not hit the L2 that hard because i have hit the individual tracks pretty hard with some compression. I like to keep it simple.

that price is looking very reasonable ,especially for what it has feature/spec wise.

I use a pair of EL-8SX Distressors.

I just got Pro Tools & a UAD-1 card so am going to look into my options there as well.

(BTW: I'm new here...)

Yes indeed.
I don't alway use them on my 2-buss, but if I do compress my 2buss mix they're all I got.
I love them, they're very versatile & make my stuff sound huge.
I can be subtle or crush & distort if I want.
I'm not a very experienced mix engineer & am by no means a Mastering eng, I do everything pretty much by ear.

I usualy crank my input up to get the big sound (between 7 & 9), attack & release all depend on the tracks - sometimes I like the 'pump' effect,

I do primarily underground/sample based hip hop.
(think old school Ultramagnetic, Paul C., Marley Marl, etc...)
I like that big, loud, grimey analog sound...
Probably one of the few that still do, but albums by JayDilla, (JayLib), Madlib, MF Doom, etc... Kind of have a similair sound I like.
Lotsa compression and by no means crispy & clean sounding.

I used to always track to 1" tape & mixdown to 1/4" but as mentioned, just set up my Pro Tools (LE) system so may be retiring the tape for most work & looking at tracking most my stuff digital, although will be keeping my console. I'll save my 1" for special projects.

I have considered getting a new 2 buss comp, I had my eye on the API 2500 for a bit.
Would love the Manley Vari-Mu but it's damn $$$$$ !!

I gotta lot to learn now that my new studio is ready for action, so will be hnaging out here more.

Yes keep the 1", you can do transfer from the 1" to protools to get the best of two worlds. I´ve been thinking about getting a multitrack tape, do you have any suggestions? I saw a studer A80 1" 8trk recently, that would be great don´t you think?

Clean signal path ... and I mean 99.5% invisibly clean. It's flat from 8 hz to 50k or some crazy spec like that ... sounds as close to invisible as I've ever heard.

4 modes of compression: clean, fet, opto, meekish. for mastering, hitting it so the meters twitch (up to 1/2 db) gives a nice tightening ... for mixing (did a little yesterday) going crazy is fun too.

Stereo image adjust seats the center channel with just a subtle tweak of the pot, or again, can be used more radically in a mix.

I'm very pleased, especially for mastering hip hop/R+B and my own rock mixes from 2" where i like all the tones and wanted a super clean 2 buss comp.

Clean usually means a sound, often means a cleansing or sterillity, and this is not that kind of thing. Damn close to not there at all, with subtle transformer weight as you lay into it more and more ... and it cna be radical but i dont use it like that.
