(BTW: I'm new here...)
Yes indeed.
I don't alway use them on my 2-buss, but if I do compress my 2buss mix they're all I got.
I love them, they're very versatile & make my stuff sound huge.
I can be subtle or crush & distort if I want.
I'm not a very experienced mix engineer & am by no means a Mastering eng, I do everything pretty much by ear.
I usualy crank my input up to get the big sound (between 7 & 9), attack & release all depend on the tracks - sometimes I like the 'pump' effect,
I do primarily underground/sample based hip hop.
(think old school Ultramagnetic, Paul C., Marley Marl, etc...)
I like that big, loud, grimey analog sound...
Probably one of the few that still do, but albums by JayDilla, (JayLib), Madlib, MF Doom, etc... Kind of have a similair sound I like.
Lotsa compression and by no means crispy & clean sounding.
I used to always track to 1" tape & mixdown to 1/4" but as mentioned, just set up my Pro Tools (LE) system so may be retiring the tape for most work & looking at tracking most my stuff digital, although will be keeping my console. I'll save my 1" for special projects.
I have considered getting a new 2 buss comp, I had my eye on the API 2500 for a bit.
Would love the Manley Vari-Mu but it's damn $$$$$ !!
I gotta lot to learn now that my new studio is ready for action, so will be hnaging out here more.
