lol, I'm still waiting for a good opportunity to try out Harmony in a session. I played around with it on my own for a bit and it seems promising so far.

It all depends on what the vocal needs, how it was recorded, etc... I don't use a particular plugin, or have a pre-determined route that I'm going to take before listening to the vocal itself. I just make decisions based on what's in front of me at that given time.

Yeah I don't see what the fascination is with Waves Doubler. It just sits idly in my VSTfx DAW soft rack. I will give it a go sometime in the next few days, and get back to you guys on that - if I demo it. When I did demo it before, it just didn't give my vocals what I was looking for. It might have been because the vocals were too "dry". Now that I know how to de-dry vocals, I will show Waves Doubler some love again.

Waves SuperTap...ok ok I seem that PSM and s12512
have co-signed on it. So I will give it a go sometime soon too.

Onto my list that's good for vocals:

1) Number fukkin' 1 here: Voxengo Voxformer.
I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned it....really.
This VST kicks Antares Mic Modeler's ass on the double (no pun intended to Waves Doubler.) *Roger from What's Happening Now kind of laugh*

2) Jesusonic (affiliated with Cockos/REAPER) Noise Gate:
The best noise gate ever! Holy fukkin sheeeeit!
For example, a user can record in a room of people talking **** and if the user/engineer sets the cardoid mic to only pic up in one direction and if that user is directly in front of the mic close enough while a whole bunch of people a hecklin' and chattin away. This noise gate will filter out the hecklin' into light "static" in the background and the user vocals will have clarity.

3) Dry/Wet filter in iZotope Ozone 3. Yup I set the Wet filter on 1.0 for basic vocal plate reverb and set the Dry filter on 45% to 65% of the original vocal signal.

3) Waves C4 - what such an unbiased compressor!!! It works on anything!!

4) Crysonic Spectra'PHY - what a kick-ass transparent limiter. I keep the settings on default and just pump up the Input signal if necessary. Every now and then, the vocalist (me or anybody else) may have been too close to the mic and in that rare instance, the Output would be lowered a fraction of a decibel.

Here for the gear

I love Voxformer by Voxengo - really simple channel strip.

All so ohmfoce's Ohmicide plug is just awesome on messing up anysound - vocals included.

how does the La-2a sound in comparison to the actual rack???

None.

The more dynamic & important the instrument, the more i count on outboard to preserve & process its sound.

Especially vocals.

My opinion.

depends, but la2a, fairchild, pultec, 1176 (uad or bombs), mcdsp's comps and eq's, epure, sonalksis and psp tend to get used more often. reverb wise, breverb and psp. delay fabfilter's stuff (their pro c comp is wicked too)

I am surprised to see so many reverbs mentioned here. I thought that was kind of old school. Its really an art to get a good sounding vocal without reverb.

I had not really looked into this before, but in looking at it, it seems to be primarily a channel strip with a two band compressor. It seems to be more geared toward ease of use rather than offering anything new (from reading their page about it). I don't see anything about microphone modeling though - and Antares discontinued that product long ago.

Does that really improve the sound? I just use the marquee tool in logic and cut out all that stuff.

Greg-O, it really does improve the sound. You might think Voxformer is simple, but it strips away alot of the naughty bits with ease. It works for me contrary to what the non-believers and haters may say.

Yeah but the Jesusonic Noise Gate is even better than Sonalksis´s Noise Gater. Problem is that the JNG only, from what it seems like, can be used with any version of REAPER only and not with any other DAW.

I´m going to demo Samplitude v10.1 tonight. If there´s a good or better noise gate in Samplitude and if the mixdown resampling (at the 4096pt SINE wave level non'realtime extreme setting) in at least OGG, and/or AIF (AIFF) and/or WAV-W64 formats exist and/or with Pow'r 3 dithering, then I will have to throw REAPER under the bus and revive her when its convinent for me. Baahahahahaha!
