Like the OP did, go with what sounds good to you or you will never be satisfied. That being said, an MBox 2 and a Studio Projects C1 will do you good. For this budget, the MBox's are probably your best bet. I don't advise getting separate pres, comps, and converters with this type of budget. Consolidate as much as possible. I love the C1. The AT3035 and the BLUE Bluebird are something I can vouch for as well. http://www.myspace.com/raynew3, there are tracks on here me and my boy used with the 3035 a while ago. Those two are pretty solid. Do some research on these three mics and pick up that MBox 2 and you won't be disappointed

those tracks were made with the 3035 and mbox alone?
they sound good too! i will be getting the mbox later so as to learn protools
but for now i just need opinions on a pre-amp with my DAW being garageband. does anybody know any other tricks to getting clear vocals through garageband besides applying speech enhancing filters? i want it raw as my voice is very colored.

Completely wrong. The mic is 10x more important. Listen to a vocalist through 4 different mics then 4 different preamps and you'll understand.

And I thought the singer was the most important part... Damn you got me fooled.

mic and pre

i believe a good pre will make any mic shine .

if you had the choice which vocal chain would you record with ?

100 dollars mic ---> 4000 dollars mic pre = ?

4000 dollars mic ---> 100 dollars mic pre = ?

Not being funny, but I'd try both, see (hear) which one sounded the best and go with that.

Bringing out the best in a mic doesn't mean it'll sound good on a human voice. I'll take a U47 or a Manley Gold into any $100 amp over a 57 into a 1084 any day (FWIW - I work in a studio with all those items, and I've tried all these combinations; the better mics beat the better preamps every time). Well, that is, assuming fidelity is the goal, as opposed to a unique color or vibe.

I d say it can work counterclock..cheaper mic into hi end preamp..and you can get better results - s.o.m.e.t.i.m.e.s

SM7 into Great River via SSL EQ worked for me, I was so surprised I never got such texture,creamy up front stuff, clarity and punch at once..
