Thanks PhonoquO!
The reason I keep asking is because one of the guys that mixed the last Ghostface record had me experimenting with m/s stereo decoding on samples to bring the center down so that the vocal could breathe. I wasn't sure if this was a common technique on rap sessions with sample loops. Maybe I'll stay away from this now and simply eq and compress.

I'll do M/S stuff sometimes... sometimes HEAVY multiband compression, somtimes nothing... sometimes sneak in a bit of delay/ambience for space... Every track is different...
Even just plain volume rides (on the sample or even the whole track!) between verses and choruses can be the "gravy" for your mix...

Do whatever works, and take every advanage you can get!

i was always a little intimidated by multiband compression, too many variables to mess up. perhaps i'll look into it further.
