Mike Dean's mixing/mastering set up

I am getting really annoyed. Every time a song that Mike Dean mixed and mastered comes on in my car, it has massive amounts of bass, but with more headroom and clarity with other instruments than any other commercial mixes that I play as references.

I don't know if anyone is familiar with his mixing/mastering set up or even techniques. I can get clean or good mixes, but nothing to punch on the level as his.

First up

have you watched all of his Pensado Place interviews down the years....?

he's also on here from time to time (search the forum)...and lets off the odd little golden nuggets indirectly on his twitter feed.

re: headroom and loudness....

as everyone always says...its all about the gain staging and dynamic range.

i dont know what stage your at so apologies if you know this already......but a massive thing i learnt was....

early in the mix i would have a loud drum kit, particularly kick and snare ....thinking that this would translate to the master as a banging mix

..but by time came to mixdown and master of course my dynamcis were all wrong and the kick transients would be getting slaughtered at the MB compressor/limiter 2 bus stage and the whole mix getting squashed.

I read a lot about bruce swediens approach and his belief that compression is for children....and re-structured my mixes so that i controlled my dynamics through Good gain staging ,Then Muchos Automation Of The fader levels , upwards compression : expansion ....And good sub groups

Jaycen Joshua has a great mix set up its worth looking into

they say that the less work thw 2bus has to do the better your mix.

so....Now I create a controlled dynamic range pre-2 bus by good gain staging on the individual channels , And now balance the mix to what i want the dynamics to be befpre ever hitting the 2bus

Again apologies if thats elementary ...but i came from making uk garage and house into more recently, trap and soul and this change in the way i mixed has had enormous benefit to getting the loud but clear sound you described.

sorry if you know all that.

ps. Mike Dean is a G.
