Too Short - Freaky Tales bass

Hello, can anyone help me figure out how to get the bass sound in Freaky Tales by Too Short?

What I am really striving for is this sound (starting at 0:27), which is similar -

but I put Too Short in the title since more people would be familiar with it.

I'm using TAL-BassLine and the clean bass preset sounds similar, but I can't quite can't the sound dialed in. Maybe TAL U-NO-62 is more appropriate but I am very new to synths.

Thanks

I seem to remember reading somewhere that Too Short production team used to use the Roland JD800

Ya I can tell you, a fat Roland bass box with a deep gnarly sub square the pairs perfectly with the 808 used in the beat.

I found out where I got the idea it was a JD800....

...Gearslutz.

too short, ant banks, dangerous crew

And lyrics from a Too Short song:

Quote:
[Verse 1: Too $hort]
Get some drums from a break and then break yo' ass
You want beats from the crew? We'll take yo' cash
5 G's for a mutha****in' song
And if you can't pay it, keep movin' on
I'm into somethin' that your fake ass never can handle
With your SP-12 and your raggedy samples
Better stick with the James Brown and pay him
'Cause the JD 800 ain't even playin'
Unless Pee Wee hit them keys
Ant Banks on the beats, now we makin' G's
$horty B got the bass and we sellin' it
**** kinda fat like a mutha****in' elephant
Sample that **** if you want
You better try to sample this dangerous funk
'Cause ain't nobody trippin' on your fake ass tape
Should've got some beats from my nigga Ant Banks
But Banks ain't thinkin' 'about no weak ****
Now you're goin' out like MC Bitch
And ain't nothin' worth killin' like a sucker
Why you wanna make fake beats, mutha****er
Should've came real like the Oakland city
Beat your ass to death with a S950
It's not a James Brown loop, it's not Parliament
But you can smell it 'cause the sho' got a funky scent
It's called The Dangerous Crew, make you feel stupid
Play a thousand records and you still can't loop it
'Cause it's not to be found, but if you do
Nothin' you could try make you sound like the crew
Shorty B played the bass on lots of hip hop songs. He's plays bass guitar. You're not gonna get the sound from a rompler or synth.

Shorty B is a producer most notably known for his work with Too Short and the Dangerous crew, but most don't know he was a part of Digital Underground in the beginning. He wrote and produced "Tales Of The Funky" off the gold-selling 'Sons Of The P' album. From there, he was a part of the 4 Too Short albums that went platinum in the 90's (Shorty the Pimp, Get I Where You Fit In, Cocktails and Gettin' It).
Here's a really good interview. The guy grew up in the go-go scene in D.C., somehow hooked up with George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, and went from there. So when it comes to funky bass lines, he was there being mentored by the founders of funk.

So the answer is, if you want some of those funky basslines from the Too Short Spice 1 Ant Banks Dangerous Crew days, you'll have to pick up a real bass guitar, tune it for funkiness, and sample and sequence it.

Freaky Tales didn't have any guitar bass in it at all- all synth.

This song came out years before the JD800 nor the Dangerous Crew were even thought of.

Yes, it's all synth. If I recall, it was made with a Prophet 5, but similar basses could be made with most any synth.

If you've got Reason theres a Malstrom patch in the Synth Bass folder that sounds nearly identical. I cant remember the exact name but theres only 20-30 patches total to sort thru...
