Early 90's Memphis Rap Producers and 808 Drums Used

I bought the Digital Sound Factory Ensoniq EPS/ASR library from eBay. After downloading the samples and going through the 808 drums, I instantly realized these are the same drums used in the EightBall and MJG "Comin' Out Hard" album, I kid you not!!! I actually listened to the drums in the songs and compared them to my samples. They hit hard!!! I've also noticed these drums used by other Memphis underground producers during the early 90's as well. They must've had Ensoniq EPS sampling keyboards.

Anyone else noticed this?

I haven't got the real thing to compare it with but I think the ensoniq 808 kit was one of the better attempts at reproducing the real thing. I think a lot of the early Memphis guys were rocking Roland r8's which I guess was like the cheaper alternative to a real 808.

+1

Yeah, I think some did also use the R8. I actually have all of the above 3 mentioned and they all sound good in their own way. I can't say one sounds quite like the other because they have their own character. I will say that the 808 bassdrum of each of them hit really hard compared to many other 808 kits or sample libraries you typically find.

Another hard-hitting 808 clone I could mention is the Novation Drumstation but I don't think it existed back in those days. However, I do think the Drumstation 808 has a lot of similarities to the Ensoniq 808 soundwise.

Here for the gear

Those are just regular 808s that were found in several of the Boss Dr series drum machine. A majority were all using the Dr-660 drum machine. The only producer I am aware of that used an R8 was MC mack - he used the RX-8 drum machine by Yamaha in the early days.
