The best produced / mixed / mastered Hip Hop albums?

Hi,

I'm looking for albums along the lines of 2001 by Dr. Dre. I know it's considered a reference album... So what other albums would you say come close to it in regard to sound quality?

I love Hip Hop, but since i bought PSI monitors, i can't listen to 80% of my Hip Hop records anymore. The monitors really reveal when something sounds bad, and lets be honest here, most Hip Hop classics aren't exactly good quality (obvious because most of it is sample based and done on "lo-fi" machines).

Stuff that sounds good:
- The Roots (well duh, live band)
- Some Dilla stuff
- Some De La Soul stuff (to much bass tho)
- Some of Pete Rocks stuff too...
- Fugees
- Morcheeba
- Some RJD2 stuff
...just a few examples.

Help me out...

Or is the solution to listen to Hip Hop with Hi-Fi speakers and boomboxes?

You probably don't have an ear for quality. The sound of classic hiphop is sought after.

Some good albums -

Busta Rhymes - The big bang
Common - Be
Nas - Illmatic
Cypress Hill - Temples of Boom
Dilla - Nearly everything
Kanye West - MBDTF
Nas and Damien Marley
Wu Tang Clan - The W
Madvillian

All great suggestions...
Not to add references, but just to give a quote to PSI: I've installed the mastering system in my room and OMG!!! ... perfect sound environment that give you the possibility of listening to any little detail!

He Got Game by Public Enemy is a great album!!!!!! It's even got KRS-ONE and Jack Dangers from Meat Beat Manifesto on it. The mix quality is really good although I have the impression that the mix engineer didn't quite know how to handle the Jack Dangers track. It could've been made to hit quite a bit harder.

WillPower by Will.i.am is lyrically one of the worst albums I've ever heard, but ironically, the mix and production is pretty smooth at parts. It's really a disappointment that such talent goes to waste on egomania and corporate materialistic branded bragging. But it does have some good moments. And the cameos are pretty mainstream in a big way too. It's worth listening to if you've never had a chance to hear it. "Great Times Are Coming" is a pretty good tune. But I don't own any tunes off that album for all the reasons why I enjoy KRS-ONE. Will.i.am is just too much into himself and all his money and I'm not into the big room house sound. "Ghetto Ghetto" is also a good tune though, so he's not 100% lost.

It's a shame Will.i.am can't team up with KRS-ONE so will can learn some better ethics and lyric content and KRS can get some good production tips and video tips.
but they'd probably never be caught together unless heaven burned up.

Here's a tune that sums up the problem:

he's glammed up to hell in style and money. the video probably cost several thousand to make. but the lyrics and attitude embodies a lot of the problems with mainstream major label hip-hop. it's really too bad. I'd love to hear an instrumental version of the tune with KRS-ONE rapping instead.

we can dream anyways....

OK, and for a good bass test of your monitors: i against i by Mos Def and Massive Attack (I know! That's a killer combo!)

You never knew BEP when they actually made hiphop, Will can spit decent lyrics if he wants. Annoyingly I can only find this link where the track has been pitched up to avoid copyright. I recommend getting the first 2 BEP albums to hear what they were about.

As for the thread question I would say Cold vein by Cannibal Ox.

+1 on The Roots, Tribe and Busta's earlier stuff . Loved the 2001 Dre album musically but never liked the limiting/clipping direction the mixes took.
