Listen to a few different albums that people suggested here.

Hands down the winner is 2Pac - All Eyez On Me.

Crazy how something made decades ago can still sound so good. It's not even a competition compared to the rest.

Let's try something a bit more contemporary:

Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid, M.A.A.D City (sonically one of the best sounding records of this decade IMO)
Childish Gambino - Because The Internet
A$AP Rocky - At. Long. Last. ASAP

All three records boast ambitious production values married with involved mixing.

Someone mentioned snoop dogg- the dogg father and that is spot on, man that album was light years ahead of its time engineering wise.

Personally I've noticed that R&B is often mixed a lot better than Hip-Hop. For example, the production and mix quality on Mariah's Emancipation of Mimi album was off the hook and very modern. You can listen to it now and it sounds like what's happening right now except it was made a massive 14 years ago!

For hip-hop production and mixing, the album Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest was very revolutionary at the time and broke all the rules for how people thought songs needed to be mixed and set the trend for heavy bass in hip-hop which is still a trend now, almost 30 years later.

Glad to hear some people mentioning Kendrick's albums, I think they're done extremely well. Writing, arranging, performance, and all the audio production are great.

My favorite from the last decade or so is the last Tribe Called Quest album, "We Got It From Here..." It's badass in every respect.

From earlier, I think the first three Busta Rhymes albums are gold: The Coming, When Disaster Strikes, and Extinction Level Event.
