Things We Are Supposed To Hate, But Love!

We all know that in the world of audio, there are things we must hate; adats, peavey bandits, mackie mixers, etc.

But, I have the feeling that we all have some "skeletons in out closet." My skeleton is the tascam 488 cassette portastudio. I use it for the hiss, the varispeed, the way it sounds when you record with noise reduction but don't use it on the playback, the ****ty eq, and the ****ty pre's. For some reason, I can't get enough. I'm always running something out of my daw into the 488, and back.

So what are your "skeletons"?tutt

Auto-tune.

sorry.

It saved a clients project again today, and because i had it, it made me money..

( I do love it even more when I don't need it though!)

And while I am commiting heresy, The same goes for Sound Replacer and Amp Farm too.....

SPX90 and PCM60. Fake del la fake. Can make certain things 'sit' in a mix like nothing else.

Best to all.

SM.
Hey SM,

The Edison is one of my favorites along with the Desper and the Neve 33608.

I use a pair of SPX90's in bypass(mono), to thin out modern 24 bit delays(makes it blend more naturally).

Another little cheezy gem, is the Roland EH-50. And I use that on...

Hey a guy has to have some secrets right.

My Finalizer is back! Out of the mothballs, providing me with a 'mastering guide eq / level pounding' - I wont run my mixes through it as I print them, but it helps me a/b stuff with commercial CD's and give me a ballpark replication of 'mastering' as I mix.

I also use it to SRC from 96/24 down to 44.1/24

I suppose an AMS RMX 16 reverb doesnt count does it?

EH-50... There's only one setting on this unit worth a piss... Once you find it, you'll know.

SE-50... Check out the "Rotary" settings (Rotary Drive, #76 is the ****nitz!) cajonezzz. Better than Viagra, or uhm, so I've heard, I mean, Viagra, *nervous chuckle* the this is, see, it's, er....

SE-70... I like tweeking the Modulation Delay depending on the song I'm working on. It's simple to get the hang of.

Midiverb4... FullChrs setting is great on nylon stringed ac guitars, although one of my assistants freaked out when she heard it on a steel stringed. I also like my WEDGE (poor mans 480L) which I got on the $99 closeout at banjomart a while back. The wedge basically has all the Midiverb stuff back into it, but it handles more like a LARC (which is kinda a pain in the ass with the cables hangin' out of the unit. The TAP function is really useful for tweaking the perfect predelay if you are using one of the verbs in it.

Edison... $50 used, beats out the Desper Retro in most cases.

Ultrafex... Spatial, Exciting, NR, Subpro, Funness.

DBX 163X... Er, 1 slider, if you need a manual for this, then you are ********. (No offense to ******s)

SRV-2000... Sometimes I think I use this unit just to piss off engineers that hate the sound of digital reverbs. Expect to do head mutes with this bad boy as it's pretty noisy as well.

More recently, the MOD pro, and the Filter pro have been rocking my world when my mix is boring or a client says something like "Can you put some kind of effect on it". Best $300 I've spent in a while.

Considering about half of these have already been named, maybe they aren't as skeletal as we think.

Hey Steve,

Its an EH-50 not a SE-50.

The Roland EH-50 is a tabletop enhancer.

Sorry Steve,

My bad.

You are right about the SE-50.

I also liked some of the flange programs on synth strings.

the rockman sustainor, on the clean 2 setting, with heaps o' compression, a t.c. eletronics chorus pedal, + whatever delay, direct into the board; still one of the all-time great clean guitar sounds.

Are you using it as a submixer, or just as a way to utilize the digital ins on your 001?

A circuit-bent Behringer 1953 Ultragain preamp, great for adding some color.

A tiny 15w Crate transistor 1x8" combo - preferably in combination with a 212 loudspeaker or a redbox. I often use this signal chain to add distortion on bass or vocals when I mix - i feed the Crate from a mult.

Electrix EQ Killer - this stereo box is the bomb! If you can find one, get it. Very effective for killing frequency bands. Also has a decent RIAA amp.
