VIBE

its ALL about the VIBE. not a lot of music has VIBE these days. its just PRODUCT. no wonder why people dont have a problem "stealing" it. the music doesnt make you WANT to give money to the artists... ****, almost every CD i have bought recently i have wanted to return [but you CANT]

funny too because the last CD i got that just kicked my ass with emotion was a Suplecs CD that i got for FREE because i let the band crash at my house for the night. those guys ROCK. its analog as hell, the drums were smacked like a crackwh0re, hiss for days... intruding on the music. hell, even some sloppy playing in parts. but DAMN. shes SO heavy.

another one i got for free. Clutch's Jam Room. i actually got 3 of them, the limited edition first run of them [1k i think in existance]. man, that album kicks SO MUCH ass. sounds so freaking live. all digital. just BEAUTIFUL sounding drums... sounds that would make john bonhams dick explode [and talent way beyond his as well]... i have bought all their other CD's. even the last one which i worked on. but Jam Room was something they did while between major labels.

another one [and a participant here]
GAM's Phase8 album i got FREE. kicking my ****ing ass. i have gone through 2 of them already. i am working on my THIRD copy. im going to just have to rip this bitch so i dont have to keep hitting him up for copies.

Squishy, geezus ****ing christ. the singer of this band works with me. a white curtis mayfield. this dude has got so much freaking soul. i got their album FREE. muthafunker. this **** is fully wicked... although i would LOVE to remix this in surround [but they lost the master files for it... didnt backup right] wicked ass jimi inspired guitar on it. funk to the core... and they play LIVE to a click track [well a click light blinking]

VIBE.

just those 4 bands at a live show together while the audience was all tripping on acid would be some sick ass ****. those 4 CD's [SELF-released, or small boutique label] make the major labels look like a sick joke.

i dont know where this thread is going to travel... doesnt have to be posts like mine. i just wanna know what makes you HARD musically.

well "free" on that one... i DID hook him up once too so maybe free was the wrong word. hell, even the suplecs... i didnt ask for one, they just left it on my coffee table before they jetted. i didnt ask for any of them except Squishy [but i did buy their DAM mp3 cd version of it] and GAM.

mine skipped right in 'the Rose'... right as it started to jam. too bad it didnt hit one song later that i want to burn out of the CD heh but its a solid album from start to finish. the drummer on it is just sick. so... i there a halloween show? did you know thats our "anniversary"? [the day we got "together"... not our wedding day, that was April Fools Day]

Not sure if I would like any of those bands or not, but it's worth a try. Nothing has seriously turned me on musically for a long time, and that's not because I'm getting caught up in my own music. I would like some goddamn inspiration goddamit madd

Wish me luck.

Thanks for the words...

Crushed, I listened to the cd last night and will email some thoughts...

Phase 8 was started on a Tascam 38, partially overdubbed on a VS 880 and finished on ADATs... Maybe the labels should take note. Vibe and location was a big part of the albums Vibe.

Dude. I love my pussy-close-up. Isn't he cute!! Reminds me of one of my own cats.

I have been amazed to hear fibes expand on how Phase 8 was recorded. Such amazing depth and clarity--and definately Vibe.

i think phase8 is DEFINATE proof you dont need great gear to make a great recording... sonically and musically. although i would LOVE to remix that whole album [except track10] in 5.1

i have a complete problem deciding what is on the vs880 and ADATs... i can definately pick out the 38. i find it amazing considering the equipment used... but im wondering, would a bigger budget and timeticking big studio vibes have helped this recording at all?

Some of the stuff that I'm most happy with are the keyboards, guitars and some vocals I did at my 1 room apartment in the Flannery O'connor childhood home through an ART pre and a Vs880. Most of the arp/moog sounds were done that way, so were the guitars on spaceman2 and almost all of "Something in here." It helped having the water*&^% next to the VS.

Now for the quiz...

Which tracks used 2 Radioshack PZMs for the drums?

I think just two tracks on the album have this treatment. Yes the only two mics...

The top end is all hashy and the snare is much brighter sounding...

just from not listening and guessing.... 'slowwurm' and 'truck' just because those two sound entirely different than the rest.

I saw Mother Superior on July 5th. They are possibly the best live band on the planet! Their "Sin" record is pretty cool. They call what they do "heavy soul" and that sums it up well.

When they finished their set I looked at my brother and said “I’m glad I’ll never have to follow them!”

Truck and Slowurm were done together at a different time so AJ you kinda got it.

Fibes. AJ. What music are you talking about with the VS880 and the PZMs, etc? Is it Phase 8 and if so can I find it somewhere? I'm always interested to hear what people can do with some talent and the 'pro-sumer' gear they have.

FWIW, when I had my VS I recorded some guitar tracks that I have a hard time besting even with my current studio. I went in direct, no mics. Probably having no time constraints, and doing take after take after take after take (ala Brian Wilson except with gtrs) until it was EXACTLY what I wanted is what made it happen. And I'm not even a slightly good guitarist.

Ya know, I use to own a VS-880. I'm actually having a hard time beating what I did on that machine. . .5 thousand dollars later

Yup. I did a record for a band called Patel a few years ago when I first setup the studio on a 1/2" 16 track and a Wackie 8-bus. The outboard gear was all stuff you can buy used for about $100 a piece and I mixed it to DAT using the stock converters. It still sounds pretty damn good and I like listening to it. One of these days I'll probably remaster it for myself just to make it a little more listenable. But as is it's pretty good, just a little dull.
