Slipperman - about gain

Hello Slipperman,
a couple of times I've seen you stress the importance of keeping optimal gain structures throughout the recording chain. I'd really like to hear you elaborate a bit more on this.

I of course realize that to a degree this is dependant on what pieces of equipment one is using. Like, "the X product sounds best for this application when run hot, the Y product sounds best for that application when run pretty cold", and so on.

But still I'd like you (and anyone who would care to chime in) to sorta let us in on your general way of thinking when it comes to gain structure. So get up on your soap box and let us have it.
