Gordon Raphael - bio/discography!

Gordon Raphael is a musician and record producer born in New York, best known for The Strokes- Is This It, Room On Fire, and Regina Spektor’s astonishing debut Soviet Kitsch.

After spending his rebellious teenage years in Seattle playing rock- n-roll keyboards in bands, Gordon taught himself how to use tape recorders and analog synthesizers as a method of writing his own obscure, outer-space songs. These compositions featured heavy use of ring modulator, Arp Odyssey synthesizer, Echoplex, phase shifters, mad distortion and poetry. His own bands were Mental Mannequin, Colour Twigs, Sky Cries Mary and Absinthee.

In 1998 he made an honorable pilgrimage back to New York where he planned to dazzle the “Big Apple” with his West Coast musical brilliance. In fact, performing songs in nightclubs was rather slow going, but his Transporterraum NYC studio was earning a reputation for great recordings done at a cheap price. Cutting edge Berlin producer Moses Schneider (Beatsteaks, Tocotronic) joined forces with Gordon, helping him with the studio, and also bringing him to live in Berlin by early 2005. By that time Gordon had recorded over 100 bands, including The Strokes, Regina Spektor, Skin, The Libertines, Damon Albarn, Ian Brown, Hinds, Satellites and Kill Kenada.

As a producer, songwriter and music fan Gordon Raphael prefers music that is unique and powerful, always choosing to work with bands and artists that have the magic spark of creativity- not basing his interest in trends or commercialism. He’s already released sixteen of his own albums, the latest, “Sleep On The Radio” was recorded in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
