"Bright" mastering

Hello Phil and Paul. I saw you guys live 3 times back in 1996 during the "In Sides" tour. I loved your last album "Wonky", but notice the mastering on it as well as on Paul's "8:58" project and to a lesser extent on the "Blue" album are on the crisp, bright, treble-heavy side. I'm just wondering if this was a deliberate stylistic choice, and if so, why? Thanks!

Hi Aligak

interesting. i hadn't noticed . No not deliberate , but maybe just a reaction of the mastering engineer ( the fantastic Kevin Metcalfe ) and us to the music. However were none of us getting any younger so maybe its compensating for top end loss!

I have to say though I've always favoured crispy sounding music , maybe its from my love of bands like crass and the dead kennedys, very trebly music indeed.

Thanks for the answer Paul. Btw, "Stringy Acid" still gives me the goosebumps to this day and "Lush 3 (Euro Tunnel Disaster '94)" is my favorite techno track of all time! Hope you guys make it out to the U.S. again for a tour!
