Musical Inspirations

Mark, appreciate you doing this, congrats on the album, it really is quite an impressive body of work.

I wondered what your musical inspirations are, obviously there's a ambient theme running through some of the tracks but some have an almost timeless or medieval quality to them, is that era of music something that inspires you?

Cheers Rewski,

I guess bar the obvious thing that I'm a massive fan of Moondog - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2DqLucTDww but really i have been drawn to those kind of chords or melodies since i started. I also love Balil and Black dog's Music i always felt that some of his Melodies had that feel as well - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWoBHu9X03Y - Thats a all time fav of mine. Whirling of Spirits, Norte Route, Small Energies, those 4 tunes are a very high point for Electronic music imho for that time. I remember first hearing them and thinking Jesus christ i need to work harder Thats a gift really, its not like i would listen to it and try and do that, More reaching for the Unobtainable.

Same with Richard James when i hear certain tracks of his it reminds me of Cornwall and the west country. I was trying to find a way of getting that across with the press release for Under the Sun.

I also love Folk music maybe slightly less straight up Traditional Folk music in general but bands like Pentangle for example where some of it was more traditional and some you could hear Jazz and Blues and Soul mixed up in there as well. But u can most certainly tell they were inspired by Traditional Folk songs from a time way b4 they started.

Here is a fav of mine from them - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3S2brPXjEM When Danny Thompson comes in!!! Thats some Rudeboy folk Dbl bass

I also love Prog Rock stuff as well, so maybe its a combo of being into that and Folk music.

Thanks Mark, love that Moondog track. I get the prog influence, love the traditional English folk influences you get from Soft Machine and Gentle Giant. Will check out Pentagle.

Nice one, yeah i was going to mention both those bands actually but was wary of just making long lists I just did a mix for NTS Radio where i went through a load of music that relates to the album in some way. I think its announced tomorrow.

David Axelrod is another one, Check - Earth Rot and Songs of Innocence, in fact all of his albums you can't go wrong

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vx-JzRzsCss Janis - Focus

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFmqHiHMC1Q - Comus

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6en1BTlY0Kw - Vashti Bunyan

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rs0AmruS8Ro Loads of Bo Hansson's music

Check the Light Flight album from Pentangle - I was listening to this live version again last week its pretty impressive! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9gCN9-Jnfg

Pretty much all 60s and 70s Prog from Uk and Europe there will be hints of it. If i think of any more specific ones ill post them.

Vashti Bunyan is beautiful

Love Axelrod productions, this little know 45 gets overlooked

Adderley's 'Big Man' is a great album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCpLa6upDi8

this track at 2.33 sounds like a Roni Size mellow drum & bass tune at 45rpm.

Did you go to the live concert at Festival Hall, Richard Ashcroft's Holy are you - Electric Prunes cover was pretty amazing.

Thanks Mark

Axelrod was such amazing composer. His work saw a resurgence in the mid 90's, mo'wax put out a 12" of his. I dont know what he's up to now. I sort of lump him in with Van Dyke Parks.
