Preamps and DI

Hi Danny, thanks for taking the time to do this, it's been very interesting so far.

Recording synths through DIs and preamps has become quite the trend, and a common topic on forums. Of course some people say that there is no reason to run a line-level signal through a preamp, or attenuate it with a DI just to re-amplify it later. Other people hold that DIs and preamps add their own character which can be quite desirable.

Do you ever record through DIs or preamps, or do you stay in the line-level world all the time?

Hmmm I don't really know about pre-amps and DI boxes on synths, I guess it can be cool...if the pre amp has some good tone control and gain 'timbre' or character.
I do run my stuff through all kinds of (theoretically useless) boxes sometimes(hifi equipment/effects processors dry outs etc.) to animate the sound....

and I do use Amp Simulators a lot, boxes made for electric guitars that simulate pre-amps/amps from various bygone eras. Like you can put a 60s Psych-Fuzz Ampeg Amplifier over an don't need much imagination to know that is going to sound pretty sweet

THe Unfolding The Future With Amateur Space Jazz album was recorded entirely through a Yamaha GSP-100 thats a really crappy 90s guitar amp processor, not at all designed with synthesizers in mind, but it sounds great on them.

Amp simulators I use:
Korg Ampworks, Yamaha GSP-100 and one of those racks from Digitech.
