Promoting music through radio

Dear Éric,
Could you give some advice on
How a young artist should try to get his music played on national radio stations? (I mean a no-name artist, not signed to any label, in a European country)
(I assume that the music fits the musical taste of a radio station)

Thank you!

I create downtempo/chillout/ambient/synthpop songs. A bit like a mixture of artists like Moby, M83 and Schiller...
I'm pretty much confident about quality of my music ideas. However, it's not so easy to take that first step and kick off an international music career. I'd like to serve the music scene with all my dedication so that in 10 years we can say that I'm among the artists who help shape the scene of these genres

Apart from radio promotion, how would you guide me in taking these first steps of kicking off an international music career?
Many top labels don't even listen to demos, is there a way around it?
