AES-NYC: API THE BOX® Project Recording and Mixing Console

API THE BOX® Project Recording and Mixing Console

Building on API's rich heritage of extremely high-quality recording consoles, THE BOX is a small-format recording/mixing console designed for professional project studios, home studios, and production facilities of all kinds. Optimized for the digital era, THE BOX handles all the functions needed for production not provided by most DAWs, including mic preamps, input signal processing, high-quality mix bus, cue sends with talkback, monitor control, and more, without the redundant capacities of larger consoles. Most importantly, THE BOX provides the legendary "all discrete" API sound in an efficient, cost-effective package.

Features
  • Two (2) input channels with mic/instrument/line preamp, HP filter, & integral 550A EQ
  • Two (2) input channels with mic/instrument/line preamp, HP filter, & 500 slot
  • Two (2) compressors assignable to input channels or program bus with stereo link
  • Sixteen (16) summing channels (20 channels during mix)
  • Stereo program bus with master fader, insert, and external input
  • One (1) stereo and (2) mono auxiliary sends/buses
  • Stereo cue send/bus & headphone system
  • PFL, AFL, and solo-in-place solo modes with stereo solo bus
  • Full-featured monitor section that supports two stereo monitor systems
  • Talkback system
  • Comprehensive rear panel connections with balanced inputs and outputs
  • Integrated power supply

Price: MSRP: $17,995

This looks like the best product/price ratio to come along for smaller hybrid setups so far. I know there is no daw control but at this price point u have enough to get a controller.

I can't understand the meaning of an API console that can't record a drum kit.
Maybe I'm missing something...

"Optimized for the digital era". API already has consoles to record drum kits on the market.

Wow, very well done API and at the right price.

This is another alternative to the SSL Matrix. The SSL also has DAW control and automation, which is very important for mixing; the good news is you could also automate THIS "BOX" adding an SSL's SIGMA.

Best AES in years, why didn't listen to my friends when they booked the flights?

Yepp, this and the Sigma is a match from heaven!, Get a Avid Artist control and be happy for a long time!

So I guess its off to the surgeon. I'm gonna miss my deteriorated kidney but having this will definitely null the pain enough that I'm sure after a few days I will hardly remember why it is I'm in a hospital gown.

This unit is very cheap compared to competitive units. You are not going to get API neve or SSL quality for cheaper than this. I thought 25k when I first looked at it.

Yep, and is 17 K you can buy a killer setup alternative with that $ ,,,cool if you want only API..but doubt that the monitor section is better and a Dangeous!

Ymmv, obviously, but I don't see API as the ultimate mixing console. Tracking, I adore them.
4 channels? No way for me. Inserts on all channels is great, but then again no on board eq or dynamics for individual channels.
17K for a summing mixer is too much for me and makes no sense, but maybe for some it's the perfect 'box'. Meh.

When I first saw the pics of this earlier and hadn't seen the price, I guessed it would be in the $20-25k range. I think it's very well priced, and I'm seriously tempted. For a small project studio, I think they've absolutely nailed the functionality and channel count.

I think this is a really really cool concept, but I tend to agree that $18k seems high for 4 preamps, 2 eq's, 2 comps, a summing mixer, and a monitor controller. I realize this box represents much more than those pieces in isolation and there is a cost to have it integrated as such, but surely this functionality could be had for considerably less.

My ten channel Aurora Sidecar looks like more and more of a bargain with each new product like this that gets released. If you are looking for more of a BCM10 or Melbourne, I would go that route and add an external monitor section.

If you compare it to a Mackie, yes, it's expensive.

But this is from one of THE 3 console brands and made in the USA. Let's break it down:

-API ch strip (pre+eq+comp): $3k x2
-API preamp $500 x2
-hi-end monitoring controller $3k

This leaves us $8k for the 16ch line mixer, with faders and the frame.

Not that expensive. And this might go around $16k street

Not that there aren't other good options: Matrix, Audient, Aurora. The BOX is another good one.

I think the name & logo are really nasty.
They should have given it a number like other API products, and made it fit more with the style of the 1608.

Nice features though - I'm pretty interested in this...

Although it seems to potentially fit a needed spot for many, like many! ...and the price seems to me rational, I also think that the name & the logo on the desk is a less than classy/elegant choice.
But still, I like it.
