Looks great, though I don't like the meters which remind me of something at a doctors office.

I thought it would be stepped from the looks of it but was told it isn't. We just gotta wait for Dangerous to drop the info. I hope it is stepped.

The thing that really stands out to me is the really fantastic Sidechain functionality as well as the Countours.

I'll give them a big THUMBS UP on it being a clean compressor - of course, would anyone expect anything other than clean from Dangerous?. I've always found that a lot of character compressors, while they can be really fantastic, can also cause more problems than they solve. Sometimes all you need to do is simply reduce the dynamic range without the resulting frequency mangling that happens with many comps. This should turn out to be a very big unit for the long-haul.

If the switches aren't stepped then they may be very good detents. Still I would expect a switch design and feel more like that of the BAX EQ. And it looks like all of the buttons are digitally controlling relay switches... which makes sense given how the D-Box and Monitor ST work.

Fantastic work, Chris and Bob!

I got the chance to check this thing out and critically listen to this last week. This comp is going to change the game. It's a mind-blowingly good!

Great looking unit. Sounds like it'll be amazing.

+1 on the stepped, or at least detened. I'd be surprised if it wasn't, though. Dangerous is usually on the ball with stuff like that. I'd really be shocked if they screwed that up.

Regards,
Frank

The ratio is stepped, but the gain, threshold, attack, and release are not.

Chris Muth (the electronics designer)'s exact reasoning for this:

"We wanted this compressor to be precise and accurate, and stepped controls would have made that more difficult. For example, with a stepped attenuator, the gain knob would have had to have 1dB steps in order to get the gain range we were looking for (+/-10dB). For mastering, 1dB steps are too big. Not having steps allows you to make the smallest, most precise adjustments. The same goes for threshold, attack, and release. To jump 50ms in one step just wasn't precise enough. While it may make recall a little slower, in the end doing it this way makes the end result much better."

Wow - I'm kind of surprised at Dangerous. Even the way he describes the reasoning, it's as if he's talking to people he thinks doesn't know better. Strange. Plenty of compressors that have steps or detented pots that don't jump 50ms in a single step.

Quite frankly, an extremely clean compressor that sounds like a volume fader instead of a compressor has already existed for a long time - it's called the Aphex 651. Get Jim Williams to mod it and it's even more flawless.

If you want the same with auto attack and release, get the Aphex 661.

I was looking to this to be a stepped version of what the Aphex can do.

Nice looking compressor, but if it's not stepped, I'll pass. I guess Dangerous does drop the ball once in a while!

Frank
