AES-NYC: SSL launches new improved Matrix2 console at AES NY 2013

Solid State Logic, the world’s leading manufacturer of creative tools for audio professionals, launches Matrix2 at the 2013 AES convention in NYC (Booth #2821). Since its 2008 launch the SSL Matrix console has established a high profile clientele who value its unique capabilities as a genuinely hybrid production platform. Its combination of SSL analogue summing, streamlined integration of boutique analogue outboard mic pre’s & processing (via its software controlled analogue patch system) and advanced DAW control surface, provides production power and flexibility like no other console. This new version of the Matrix takes feedback from customers and provides a collection of powerful new features.

One of the unique and much praised features of Matrix has always been the integrated software controlled patching of analogue channel inserts and this has been significantly upgraded in Matrix2. Hardware device inserts can now be loaded directly from the console hardware controls (previously this was done only via the remote browser software) with an intuitive new interface that facilitates loading individual processors, A/B comparison of different processors and building processor chains. The Matrix remote browser software has also been re-designed to provide a new ‘drag and drop’ style interface for loading processors and building chains. A powerful ‘Fader Linking’ system has been added to the console which allows two or more faders to be grouped, to facilitate stereo or 5.1 channel control or subgroup style mixing. The A-FADA (Analogue Fader Accesses DAW Automation) summing system used in Duality, AWS and the new SSL Sigma rack has been introduced to enable the analogue faders of Matrix2 to be driven by automation data from your DAW. A-FADA enables channel automation to be performed entirely in the analogue signal path but with the advantages of DAW automation data editing. The addition of A-FADA to Matrix2 facilitates project portability between different SSL products. The previously optional 5.1 output card will now be included as standard pre-fitted in all units.

A collection of smaller new features have also been added including; ‘partial TR setup save & import’ which allows selected parts of the console setup to be saved and imported as setup templates, new Preset insert matrix ‘scenes’, Preset insert naming tools, “automatic dB readout” for Pro Tools users (allowing the scribble strip to automatically display fader values upon touch), modifier key ‘press and hold’ functionality for Cubase/Nuendo users and new DAW templates for Presonus Studio One and Ableton Live!

Matrix2 will ship in Dec 2013 priced at £14,749 + VAT.
All of these new features (excluding the 5.1 output card) will be available to existing customers as a free upgrade.

Solid State Logic is the world’s leading manufacturer of analogue and digital audio consoles and provider of creative tools for music, broadcast, live and post production professionals. For more information about our award-winning products, please visit: Solid State Logic.

OMG OMG OMG!!!!!! This is great news Jim!!!!

Thank god there are still companies like SSL that really care about their customers.. Not only you guys managed to improve my console functionality, you also do it without charging.. You could have easily asked good money for such a big update but instead you choose not to. All I have to say it's thank you SSL!!!

Software and the new console will be available in December.
We'll email all registered owners once it is ready to go.

Loads of new things in it, and a cool new "stealth" paint job.

Absolutely love the new color&faders! Aside from the cosmetic changes and the inclusion of the 5.1 module, what are the main hardware differences with the previous model?

Will you have a product page soon?

Cosmetics and 5.1 are the only hardware changes apart from 2 buttons being re-labelled.

All of the new features (and there are over 20 of them) are software and free for all existing registered owners. The improvements make a really really nice bunch of additions to the Matrix workflow. That's not to say that we didn't put a lot of work into making them all happen - we've been keeping a "wish list" from Matrix owners for some time and we think we've added some proper fairy dust to it with some of the stuff we added ourselves :-)

Bravo Jim and everyone at SSL!

Your customer care is simply second to none.

Now, put STEREO direct outs on the AWS 948 and you will have really ticked all the boxes!

Why is this a new console, and not just a new software upgrade?

I would have liked to see a matrix with integrated SSL Xracks inline with the faders that you could load up anyway you want, and a mix buss comp, or at least a 24 fader version with the ability to handle more outboard gear.

And where is a Nucleus 2 with Talkback and 3 monitor switching?

This is great news. Good luck with Matrix2 and thanks for the update!!

By chance, do you have any breadcrumbs on new MacPro/Mavericks compatibility with your December update?

Sorry for OT, but will there be any update-goodies for the MX-4 owners? Like a free duende bundle so I can use the plugins natively? :p

New Mac Pro - no idea until we've got our hands on one.
Mavericks - all tested and no changes from Mountain Lion. Compatibility is good.

Yes, fader caps are different. Excellent spotting @Andy

Relabelled buttons allow you to load and A/B plug-ins and chains direct from the console surface. The Insert Matrix browser is completely re-designed to allow drag&drop setup of devices and chains.

The whole things just has lots of useable stuff in the upgrade. If I do say so myself it's a pretty good job :-)

Sorry @Fraggletrollet - if you want to ask about something other than Matrix please PM me.

Im probably being dumb, but what is the difference between A-FADA automation as opposed to using 16 dummy faders in the DAW to control the analog faders via the MIDI/Ethernet connections? connections?

Isnt that how the Matrix v1 controlled the faders?

Hi Ozzy

The Matrix has 2 ways to drive the analogue fader levels, midi and A-FADA. The way A-FADA works allows you (if you want) to take pre-fader outputs from your DAW and "translate" existing automation written on audio tracks via MCU/HUI to drive the analogue fader levels. It can also work with dummy tracks just like the midi automation.

While Matrix originally had midi automation included, we wanted to add A-FADA so that sessions could move from Duality/AWS/Sigma in one easy way for all DAWs.
