Software New Tape Emulation - "Roundtone"

I proudly present the new one: Roundtone.

***edit
It is a multitrack tape machine emulation vst for Windows and Mac with several algorithms.
***

Very light on cpu, it is a mono/stereo effect to add subtle punch and colour to every track or submix/mix.

This is the actual interface:

This is an audio sample:

- dry
- bassdrum, snare, bass, guitar through individual tape
- mix through tape, too - No "emphasis"
- "Emphasis" set to max
- dry

Roundtone_Audio_Demo_mp3
Roundtone_The-Same_Audio_Demo_wav

---
This is an audio demo on the "natural" side

A multitrack drumset recording, first dry then effected.
Bassdrum, snare, panoramics and bass guitar on tape.

Note the evenness of the dynamics in the "taped" example.

Drumset_Dry_wav
Drumset-Tape_wav

---

Roundtone is currently in beta-test (send an email to my address if interested in testing)

It is going to cost 9.99$ and should be available in a few days from www.sknote.it 8)

Well it's a lovely looking plugin, but that's not important now is it?
It's a bit difficult to judge its sound from the wav demo you provided (at least to me, here at work, on the headphones) because the audio examples are not level matched.

It's just louder, which means nothing.

Here's a more fair, more level matched version (although only level matched peak-wise, the Roundtone part still has more RMS loudness - since the plugin compresses and makeup-gains)

Download Roundtone_Test_281210.wav from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

You can tell that it does add some colour and makes it denser.

Finally we seem to be having a tape emu renaissance! heh I will have to try it when it comes out. The price is right. A poor man's UAD A800.

TAAAPE WARRRZ!! Keep'em comin'!

All silliness aside though, the dry sample sound like it hit tape
already--which sounded damn-good as is.

RMS matching is the wrong way to go, with such a special case (saturation).

Peak matching is the right one...

No, that's wrong.
You don't evaluate sound by pricing, right?

Thanks miro

this one should be the first porting to Mac. It is general purpose enough to be a good candidate and it is very useful (for me, at least

I was sitting next to my wife and we were both on the internet with our laptops.

I played drums dry for myself and nothing happened.
Then I played drums tape and my wife who was still staring into her web site started bobbing her head to the beat.

"You like that do ya?" I said.
"Uh hu"

Ok.

I played the dry one without her knowing what was up

Nothing....

I played the tape version.

A smile and a head bob.

That's the best endorsement I know of.
When the girls like it you win.

Bought it.

Too funny, I was thinking the same thing

How long have we of VST ilk been begging for a good tape sim plug. The proverbial floodgates have now officially been opened.

Oh well, better late then never.

Just played with it for a few minutes on the Master buss.

A lot of tone possibilities. So far this is the more versatile Tape Emu i've heard.

I wish the emphasis knob could accentuate the high freq a bit more tho

NO brainer for under 10 bucks. Just bought it.

I assume an email with a d/l link will be forthcoming.

Quintosardo,
Could you explain what processing this plug uses? Tape machine impulses? High freq pre-emphasis? Wow and flutter emulation? Oversampling? etc

Yes, of course.
No impulses at all, no classic convolution.
It is based on the principle that we don't need to emulate a single machine, we need to get the "principle" that gives interesting side-effects and discard the bad (for me) ones (i.e. wow, flutter, noise).
What we look for were considered limits, now we understand we are missing them.

Two main aspects were considered: smooth processing, prevention of aliasing.
We attempt to get the first one by avoiding tables and interpolation. the models are computed analitically (modelling by formulae).
The second one by defining continuous variation of the model with frequency. Saturation and dynamic control are modeled with multidimensional formulae, so that, for example, saturation curve varies with frequency, without steps.
This has another important function: decreasing saturation with increasing frequency prevents aliasing. No oversampling, more transparent processing.

Emphasis is another important point: modeling pre-emphasis prevents aliasing even more and models saturation and color with frequency (depending on ips setting).

There are several requests for more "colored" algorithm. They probably will be included in the next free update.

I'm afraid this message looks worse than it is

But did you play the level matched version that I posted, or the original?

The reason is, as you probably know, the human brain works in such a way, that the louder sample always seems to sound better, when we're talking about short samples of audio. If you used the first audio demo provided, of course she would perceive the processed one to sound better, anyone would.

In fact, even the file where I evened the peak levels, it's still kinda "cheating" in the pluins favor, because the plugin sample still has a little more RMS volume. More perceived loudness. And that's what humans are gonna pick out as sounding the best in any A/B test.

If the samples had the same perceived loudness, then it would be a battle all about tone and dynamics...which I think would be a more fair test.

That said i DO like the tone that this plugin brings, and the price is great so I'll probably buy it.

Yes, I agree with you. But consider that one of the positive side-effects is increasing the rms and the perceived level inside the same "headroom" limits. So, level is actually higher, while limiting the peaks... I don't rms-match to compare when looking at limiting. You peak-matched sample is a good test
